Warm weather opens the main sowing season for Zinnia (گل زینیا), Vinca, Portulaca, Balsam (گل مہندی), Celosia and Sunflower (سورج مکھی). These summer flower seeds suit sunny pots, balcony planters, rooftop gardens, raised beds and open flower borders across Pakistan.
The collection includes low-growing flowers for planter edges, compact plants for pots, tall varieties for the back of a bed and flowering vines for vertical spaces. Gardeners can choose from double flowers, rounded blooms, feathery plumes, crested flower heads and bright mixed colours.
Bloom Guide
| Flower | Approx. First Blooms | Growth | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portulaca | 8 to 10 weeks | Low and spreading | Pot edges and sunny borders |
| Vinca | 9 to 12 weeks | Compact and bushy | Pots, beds and rooftop planters |
| Zinnia | 10 to 13 weeks | Dwarf to tall | Pots, borders and cutting |
| Balsam | 8 to 12 weeks | Upright and bushy | Pots and mixed flower beds |
| Sunflower | 9 to 12 weeks | Medium to tall | Large pots and back borders |
| Celosia | 12 to 14 weeks | Compact to medium | Pots, beds and cut flowers |
| Gomphrena | 12 to 16 weeks | Bushy and upright | Borders and dried flowers |
Blooming time varies with the variety, temperature, sunlight and growing conditions. Plants started early in seedling trays may begin flowering sooner after they are moved to their final position.
Choose Flowers
For planter edges and low displays, Portulaca develops spreading growth covered with colourful flowers. Its compact form also suits shallow, wide containers placed in strong sunlight.
Vinca provides neat, bushy plants for individual pots, grouped containers and flower beds. The collection includes mixed colours and individual F1 shades for planned displays.
Compact Zinnias suit pots and front borders, while tall Giant Double and Benary’s Giant types create height and provide longer stems for cutting. Different flower forms include layered doubles, cactus-style petals and striped blooms.
Balsam, also known as Gul Mehndi (گل مہندی), produces upright plants with flowers held along the stems. Celosia Plumosa forms soft, feathery plumes, while Cockscomb or Gul Kalgha (گل کلغہ) develops broad, crested flower heads.
Gomphrena produces rounded flower heads that remain attractive after drying. Sunflowers range from compact Teddy Bear types to tall varieties suited to large pots and open beds.
For vertical colour, Morning Glory, Cypress Vine, Butterfly Pea and Black-Eyed Susan Vine can be guided along a trellis, railing or garden support. Coleus and Kochia add colourful or finely textured foliage among flowering plants.
Sowing Time
In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow summer flower seeds from February to April. Another sowing from late August through September can provide colour later in the warm season.
In Karachi, suitable sowing periods generally extend from January to March and again from August to October. Bright morning sunlight helps young plants establish comfortably during warmer weeks.
In southern Punjab and other very hot areas, February to March is a useful spring window. A second sowing can begin from late August as temperatures start becoming milder.
In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the final hard frost.
Successive sowings made two to three weeks apart help different groups of plants reach flowering size at separate times.
Sowing Depth
Seed size provides a useful guide for sowing depth:
- Fine seeds: Portulaca, Celosia and Coleus can be pressed onto the surface and covered with a very light layer of growing mixture.
- Medium seeds: Zinnia, Balsam and Gomphrena can be sown approximately ⅛ to ¼ inch deep.
- Large seeds: Sunflower, Morning Glory, Butterfly Pea and Four O’Clock can be sown approximately ½ inch deep.
Morning Glory and Butterfly Pea have firm seed coats. Soaking the seeds in water for several hours helps moisture reach the seed before sowing.
Starting Seeds
- Fill pots or a seedling tray with a loose growing mixture.
- Sow each variety according to its seed size.
- Water gently to settle the mixture around the seeds.
- Keep the surface lightly moist during germination.
- Place emerging seedlings in bright light.
- Move tray-grown plants after they develop several true leaves.
A loose potting mix helps moisture spread evenly while allowing excess water to drain. Larger seeds such as Sunflower, Zinnia, Balsam and Morning Glory can also be sown directly in their final pots or beds.
Growing Space
Most summer flowers perform well with 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight. Coleus develops attractive foliage with bright morning light and some afternoon shade during intense weather.
Compact Vinca, Portulaca and dwarf Zinnia varieties fit easily into pots and balcony planters. Medium-growing Balsam, Celosia and Gomphrena benefit from wider containers that allow their branches to develop evenly.
Tall Zinnias, Sunflowers, Cosmos and Amaranthus suit large containers or open flower beds. Positioning tall plants behind shorter flowers keeps each layer visible.
Flowering vines use vertical space efficiently. Place their support beside the seedlings so the new stems can be guided upward as they grow.
Plant Care
Water at soil level when the upper layer begins to dry. Containers exposed to strong summer sunlight may need more frequent checks than garden beds.
Pinching young Zinnia, Celosia, Balsam and Gomphrena plants can encourage additional side branches. Regular removal of faded flowers supports continued bud development on many summer varieties.
A balanced flower fertilizer applied lightly during active growth provides nutrients for healthy leaves and blooms. Open spacing allows air to move around the plants during humid and rainy weather.
Summer flowers may attract aphids, whiteflies, mites and other small insects. Checking young shoots, flower buds and leaf undersides regularly makes early treatment easier.
Plant Lifespan
Zinnia, Celosia, Balsam, Cosmos, Gomphrena and most Sunflowers complete their growth and flowering within one season.
Vinca can continue growing for longer in warm, frost-free locations. Butterfly Pea may also return as a perennial vine in mild climates, while Four O’Clock can regrow from established roots when conditions remain suitable.

FAQs
Which summer flowers are suitable for cutting?
Tall Zinnias, Sunflowers, Celosia, Gomphrena and Amaranthus provide useful stems for fresh arrangements. Gomphrena and Celosia can also retain their shape and colour in dried displays.
Can different summer flowers share one container?
Flowers with similar sunlight and watering needs can grow together in a wide container. Portulaca can cover the front edge while compact Zinnia, Vinca or Celosia adds height through the centre.
How can I encourage more flowers?
Remove faded blooms regularly and cut flowering stems above a healthy pair of leaves. Pinching selected plants while young creates additional branches, while light feeding supports new buds during active growth.
Can summer flowers grow during monsoon weather?
Summer flowers can continue growing through rainy periods in containers and beds with fast drainage. Raised pots, open spacing and protection from prolonged heavy rain help flowers and leaves dry comfortably.
Which summer flowers attract butterflies?
Zinnia, Vinca, Celosia, Gomphrena, Sunflower and Butterfly Pea provide colourful flowers that attract butterflies and other visiting pollinators.
