Collection: Summer Flower Seeds (گرمی کے پھولوں کے بیج)

Summer flower seeds (گرمی کے پھولوں کے بیج) bring lasting colour to pots, balconies, rooftop gardens and flower beds during Pakistan’s warmer months. This collection includes compact flowers for containers, spreading plants for sunny edges, taller flowers for borders and climbing varieties for walls and trellises.

Choose flowers according to the available sunlight, mature plant size and growing space. Zinnia, Vinca, Portulaca, Balsam, Celosia, Gomphrena and Sunflower offer different heights, flower shapes and growth habits, while flowering vines make better use of narrow or vertical spaces.

Blooming time depends on the variety, temperature, sunlight and general growing conditions. Seeds started in trays may establish sooner after transplanting, while varieties with sensitive roots often perform better when sown directly in their final position.

Bloom Guide

The following times are approximate and calculated from sowing under suitable growing conditions.

Summer Flowers

Summer flowers in Pakistan need to be selected according to local heat, humidity and available sunlight. Portulaca is suitable for exposed sunny spaces and dry pot edges, while Vinca performs well in warm conditions when its roots are protected from standing water.

Zinnias are available in compact and tall forms. Dwarf varieties fit more comfortably in pots, while taller varieties provide longer stems and work well toward the middle or back of a flower bed. Balsam develops upright plants with flowers arranged along the stems, making it useful where vertical colour is needed without a climbing support.

Celosia and Cockscomb provide feathery or crested flower heads, depending on the variety. Gomphrena develops rounded flowers that retain their shape after drying. Sunflowers need more root space and are best placed where their mature height will not shade smaller plants.

Flowering vines such as Morning Glory, Cypress Vine and Butterfly Pea are useful for railings, walls, arches and trellises. These plants need support early so their stems can climb without spreading across nearby pots.

Foliage plants and ornamental varieties can be combined with flowering plants to create differences in height, leaf colour and texture. Keep enough space between plants so that faster-growing varieties do not cover smaller seedlings.

Sowing Time

In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the main sowing period generally runs from February to April. A second sowing may be possible from late August to September for varieties that can flower before cold weather becomes established.

In Karachi and other mild coastal areas, many summer flower seeds can be started from January to March. Another sowing period may be available from August to October, depending on humidity, rainfall and the requirements of the selected variety.

In southern Punjab and other very hot areas, sow from February to March so young plants can establish before the strongest summer heat. Another round may be started from late August as temperatures begin to ease.

In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the risk of hard frost has passed. Local temperatures should be considered more carefully than calendar dates, especially at higher elevations.

For a longer flowering display, sow small batches at intervals of two to three weeks instead of planting the entire packet on one day. This is particularly useful for quick-growing annual flowers.

Sowing Depth

Fine seeds such as Portulaca and Celosia need only light contact with the growing mixture. Spread them carefully, press gently and cover with a very thin layer if required. Do not bury too deep.

Medium-sized seeds such as Zinnia, Balsam, Vinca and Gomphrena can usually be covered lightly. The exact depth may vary by variety, so follow the instructions provided with the seeds.

Larger seeds such as Sunflower can be planted more deeply and often perform well when sown directly into their final pot or garden position. Direct sowing also reduces root disturbance during transplanting.

How to Sow

  1. Fill pots or a seedling tray with a loose seed-starting mixture that drains easily.
  2. Sow each variety according to its seed size and recommended depth.
  3. Water gently so the seeds remain in place and the growing mixture becomes evenly moist.
  4. Keep the surface lightly moist during germination, then provide stronger light as soon as seedlings emerge.
  5. Move tray-grown seedlings after they develop several true leaves, allowing them to adjust gradually to outdoor conditions.

Growing Space

Most summer flowers perform best with several hours of direct sunlight. In areas with severe afternoon heat, selected varieties may benefit from morning sun and light protection during the hottest part of the day.

Compact Portulaca, Vinca, dwarf Zinnia and smaller Celosia varieties can grow in individual pots or wider mixed planters. Larger Zinnias, Sunflowers and vigorous Balsam plants need more root space and wider spacing between plants.

Use pots with open drainage holes and avoid allowing water to remain around the roots. Rooftop and balcony containers can dry faster than garden beds, so check their moisture regularly during hot or windy weather.

Place tall flowers where they will not block sunlight from shorter plants. Climbing flowers should be positioned beside a railing, net, trellis or another support before their stems begin to spread.

Plant Care

  • Water near the base of the plants when the upper growing mixture begins to dry.
  • Water during the morning where possible, especially in humid or rainy conditions.
  • Pinch young Zinnia, Balsam and Gomphrena plants when suitable for the variety to encourage additional branches.
  • Do not pinch single-stem Sunflowers intended to produce one main flower.
  • Remove faded flowers regularly to keep plants tidy and support continued bud formation.
  • Apply light, balanced plant food during active growth and avoid excessive feeding.
  • Maintain airflow around leaves and stems, particularly during humid or monsoon weather.
  • Inspect new growth and the undersides of leaves for aphids, whiteflies, thrips and mites.

Plant Lifespan

Many summer flowers are seasonal annuals that germinate, flower and complete their life cycle within one warm season. Zinnia, Balsam, Celosia, Gomphrena, Portulaca and most Sunflowers are commonly grown this way in home gardens.

Some plants can live longer under suitable conditions. Vinca may continue growing beyond one season in frost-free areas, while Butterfly Pea can behave as a longer-lived climbing plant in warm locations. Their lifespan may be shorter in places with cold winters, prolonged standing water or severe weather.

Local conditions can therefore affect whether a plant behaves as a short seasonal flower or continues growing for a longer period.

FAQs

Do summer flower seeds need soaking before sowing?

Most fine and medium-sized flower seeds do not need soaking. Larger or hard-coated seeds such as Morning Glory and Butterfly Pea may germinate more evenly after brief soaking. Check the instructions for the individual variety before using this method.

Why are my flower seedlings becoming tall and weak?

Seedlings usually stretch when they do not receive enough light or when plants are crowded together. Move them gradually into brighter light and provide enough space between seedlings. Avoid placing newly emerged seedlings immediately under severe midday heat.

Can seeds be collected from summer flowers?

Seeds can be collected from many open-pollinated flowers after the flower heads have dried fully. Seeds saved from hybrids or mixed varieties may produce plants with different colours, sizes or growth habits from the original plant.

How should unused flower seeds be stored?

Keep unused seeds dry, sealed and away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Write the variety name and storage date on the packet. Germination can decline with age, and the storage life differs between flower species.

Which summer flowers attract butterflies?

Zinnia, Vinca, Celosia, Gomphrena, Sunflower and Butterfly Pea provide flowers that can attract butterflies and other visiting pollinators. Growing several flower shapes and maintaining blooms over a longer period can make a home garden more inviting to them.
