Soil and fertilizers support different parts of home gardening. Potting mixes provide a suitable root environment, soil amendments adjust drainage and moisture, organic fertilizers add nutrients gradually, and NPK or micronutrient products provide measured nutrition during active plant growth.
Choosing the right product depends on the plant, container, season and existing soil condition. A fertilizer for plants cannot correct blocked drainage, unsuitable sunlight, damaged roots or continuous overwatering, so check the growing conditions before starting a feeding plan.
Choose Products
| What You Need | Start With | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Starting seeds | Seed Starter Mix | Provides a fine, light mixture for trays and small roots |
| Filling regular pots or grow bags | All-Purpose Potting Mix | Provides a balanced starting mixture for many common plants |
| Improving slow drainage | Perlite, pumice or another coarse amendment | Creates more air space and helps excess water move through the mix |
| Helping a mix hold moisture | Coco peat or vermiculite | Helps fast-drying pots retain water for longer |
| Adding mild organic nutrition | Compost, vermicompost or a suitable plant meal | Adds organic material and releases nutrients gradually |
| Feeding during active growth | Balanced NPK fertilizer | Supplies measured nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium |
| Supporting flowering and fruiting | A suitable higher-potassium fertilizer | Supports plants during the relevant flowering or fruiting stage |
| Addressing a suspected deficiency | A suitable micronutrient product | Supplies specific nutrients after other possible causes are checked |
| Feeding roses, citrus or other selected plants | Plant-specific fertilizer | Provides a prepared formula with directions for the intended plant |
Start with the plant’s most important need rather than combining several products. Fertilizer cannot correct blocked drainage, unsuitable sunlight, damaged roots or continuous overwatering.
Potting Mixes
A potting mix combines several ingredients to create a suitable environment around plant roots. It may contain coco peat, compost, perlite, pumice, bark or other materials in proportions intended for a particular use.
Seed Starter Mix has a fine texture for filling seedling trays and small nursery containers. It holds moisture around small seeds while allowing young roots to spread through the mixture.
All-Purpose Soilless Potting Mix suits many vegetables, herbs, flowers and common plants grown in pots or grow bags. It provides a lighter starting material than ordinary garden soil, which can become compacted inside containers.
Cactus and Succulent Potting Mix releases excess water more quickly around plants that dislike remaining in wet soil. Aroid Mix provides a more open root area for suitable leafy plants, while Rose Soil Mix is prepared around the needs of established roses.
A ready mix can be used directly when stated on its product page. Avoid adding several extra ingredients without understanding how they will change drainage, moisture and nutrient levels.
Soil Amendments
Soil amendments are individual materials used to change the structure, moisture behaviour or mineral content of soil for plants. Most are not complete potting mixes and should not automatically be used alone.
Coco peat holds water and helps keep a mixture light. Ready-to-use coco peat can be added as instructed, while compressed blocks must be expanded before use.
Perlite creates air spaces and helps excess water move through a mix. Pumice provides similar structural space but is heavier, making it useful where lightweight perlite may rise or blow away.
Vermiculite holds more moisture than perlite and can be useful in seed-starting and moisture-retentive mixtures. Use it moderately for plants that need faster drainage.
Rice husk, roasted rice husk and cinder can help open a dense mixture. Coco chips, coco husk fibre and pine bark create larger spaces around roots and suit mixtures requiring a chunkier texture.
Sphagnum moss holds considerable moisture and can be used for suitable propagation and moisture-loving plants. Charcoal chips may be included in selected airy mixes, while LECA and clay balls have uses in specialised growing systems and decorative arrangements.
Match the particle size to the plant and container. Fine ingredients suit seed trays, while coarse bark and larger pumice pieces are generally more suitable for established plants with thicker roots.
Organic Fertilizers
Organic fertilizer for plants is made from natural mineral, plant or animal-based materials. These products vary in strength and nutrient content, so natural does not mean that unlimited amounts can be applied safely.
Vermicompost and leaf compost add organic material and mild nutrition to pots and beds. They can be mixed into soil or applied in a measured layer around established plants.
Neem cake and mustard cake are plant-based fertilizers used in home gardens. Apply them according to their directions and keep concentrated material away from young roots and newly germinated seedlings.
Bone meal and rock phosphate provide slowly available phosphorus. Their effect develops over time and depends partly on soil conditions. They should not be applied repeatedly simply because a plant has not flowered.
Blood meal supplies concentrated nitrogen, while fish meal, prawn meal and crab meal provide nutrients from animal-based materials. Use small measured amounts and store the packets where pets and rodents cannot reach them.
Eggshell powder releases calcium gradually as it breaks down. It does not provide an immediate correction for every calcium-related problem because root health, watering and overall nutrient balance also affect calcium movement inside plants.
Wood ash can add potassium and raise soil pH. Use it carefully because excessive ash can increase salts and make the root area unsuitable for plants that prefer mildly acidic conditions.
Gypsum and dolomite serve different purposes. Gypsum supplies calcium and sulphur without acting like garden lime, while dolomite supplies calcium and magnesium and can raise pH. Choose them according to soil needs instead of treating them as general fertilizers.
NPK Nutrients
NPK fertilizers supply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in stated proportions. The three numbers printed on the label show their relative amounts.
NPK 20-20-20 is a balanced plant fertilizer for suitable plants during active growth. It is not required at every watering, and the amount should be reduced for young plants and small containers.
NPK 5-15-45 contains a higher proportion of potassium and is used during suitable flowering and fruiting stages. Potash products also supply potassium, but their formula and concentration should be checked before application.
MAP 12-61-0 contains a high proportion of phosphorus and should only be applied according to its directions. Using a high-phosphorus fertilizer without a clear need can disturb nutrient balance instead of improving plant health.
Osmocote is a controlled-release fertilizer that supplies nutrients gradually. Its release rate can change with temperature, so the correct quantity remains important during Pakistan’s hot weather.
Measure water-soluble fertilizers accurately and dissolve them as directed. Increasing the concentration will not make them work better. Strong fertilizer applied around dry roots can cause leaf-edge burning, wilting and root damage.
Micronutrients
Plants need iron, magnesium, calcium and other micronutrients in smaller quantities than the main NPK nutrients. A smaller requirement does not mean these products can be applied without limits.
Ferrous sulphate and chelated iron are used when iron availability is a concern. Yellow leaves can also result from wet roots, unsuitable soil pH or root damage, so leaf colour alone does not confirm an iron deficiency.
Epsom salt supplies magnesium and sulphur. It can help when magnesium is genuinely required, but it is not a complete fertilizer and should not be added routinely to every plant.
Magnesium nitrate provides magnesium with nitrogen. CalMag products supply calcium and magnesium, while mixed micronutrient products provide several trace elements together.
Humic acid, amino acid and seaweed products can support an existing feeding plan, but they do not replace the main nutrients required by actively growing plants.
Follow one clear feeding plan and observe the plant’s response. Applying several nutrient products together makes it difficult to identify the cause if leaves become damaged or growth slows.
Plant Foods
Plant-specific fertilizers make selection easier for gardeners who prefer a prepared formula for roses, flowers, lemons, Bougainvillea, lawns, fruit plants, Papaya, Avocado, orchids and other selected plants.
These names indicate the intended use, but the label rate still matters. A Lemon Fertilizer should not be applied heavily simply because the tree is large, and a Rose Fertilizer cannot correct poor sunlight or waterlogged soil.
Container plants have less soil around their roots than plants growing in open ground. Begin with the amount stated for the pot size and avoid allowing dry fertilizer to collect against the main stem.
When to Feed
Feed plants while they are actively producing roots, leaves, flowers or fruits. Reduce or pause feeding when a plant is dormant, badly wilted, recently damaged or sitting in continuously wet soil.
In Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan and other very hot areas, water dry plants first and avoid strong feeding during severe afternoon heat. Heat-stressed roots are more easily damaged by concentrated fertilizer.
In Karachi, drainage becomes especially important during humid and rainy periods. Do not add fertilizer to pots that remain saturated for several days.
In Islamabad, Rawalpindi and colder northern areas, many plants slow during winter. Adjust feeding according to active growth instead of continuing the summer routine throughout the year.
Newly transplanted plants need time to settle. A correctly prepared potting mix or mild organic amendment is often enough during early establishment unless the product directions state otherwise.
How to Apply
- Read the product label and measure the amount for the container or planted area.
- Check that the soil drains properly and the plant is not severely stressed.
- Dilute water-soluble products fully before application.
- Spread dry fertilizers away from the main stem and mix them lightly where instructed.
- Water after applying dry fertilizer when required by its directions.
Use a separate measuring spoon or cup for garden products and never return it to kitchen use. When feeding several pots, prepare only the amount needed for that session. Do not store mixed fertilizer solutions in drinking-water bottles.
Safe Storage
- Labels: Keep every product in its original labelled packet.
- Moisture: Seal powders and granules against humid air.
- Sunlight: Store liquids away from strong heat and direct sun.
- Children: Keep fertilizers outside the reach of children.
- Pets: Secure plant meals, cakes and animal-based fertilizers.
- Measuring: Use separate measuring tools for garden products.
- Protection: Avoid breathing fine dust and wash your hands after handling.

FAQs
Can ordinary garden soil be used alone in pots?
Garden soil can become dense inside a container and may drain slowly after repeated watering. Use it as part of a suitable mix when appropriate, with enough compost and structural ingredients to support the selected plant.
Should stones or clay balls be placed at the bottom of every pot?
A separate stone layer does not improve drainage inside an ordinary pot and leaves less space for roots. Use open drainage holes and a suitable mixture throughout the container. Clay balls can still be used where a particular growing system or decorative arrangement requires them.
Why is a white crust forming on my soil or pot?
The crust may come from fertilizer salts or minerals in irrigation water. Review the feeding rate, clear blocked drainage holes and occasionally water deeply enough for excess salts to leave the pot when the plant and mixture allow it.
Can organic fertilizer and NPK be used together?
They can form part of the same feeding plan, but both contribute nutrients. Adjust the amounts accordingly and avoid applying several products at full strength together. Excess nutrients can create damaging salt levels even when one fertilizer is organic.
How should fertilizers be stored during the monsoon?
Keep packets tightly sealed in a dry cupboard above floor level. Humid air can make powders clump and granules soften. Store liquids upright, protect labels from moisture and keep every product away from food, children and pets.
