Collection: Organic Fertilizers

Shop organic fertilizers for pots, grow bags and home garden beds. Choose gentle soil-building options or more concentrated natural fertilizers according to the plant, its growth stage and the nutrients already available in the soil.

Organic fertilizers provide plant nutrients through composted materials, plant-based cakes and animal-based meals. They are useful for maintaining soil in pots, grow bags and home garden beds where regular watering and plant growth gradually reduce available nutrients and organic matter.

Some options provide gentle, broad feeding, while others are concentrated sources of particular nutrients. Choose according to the plant’s needs and the condition of the soil instead of applying several fertilizers together.

Choose Fertilizer

Garden Need Suitable Choice Why Choose It
General soil care Vermicompost or Leaf Compost Adds organic matter with gentle plant nutrition
Gradual plant-based feeding Neem Cake or Mustard Cake Releases nutrients as the material breaks down
Additional nitrogen Blood Meal, Fish Meal or Mustard Cake Supports plants when extra nitrogen is appropriate

Calcium source Eggshell Powder or Bone Meal Adds calcium gradually rather than immediately
Mixed natural nutrients Fish Meal, Crab Meal or Prawn Meal Provides different combinations of naturally occurring nutrients
Potassium and alkalinity Pure Wood Ash Supplies minerals while making soil more alkaline

Begin with Vermicompost or Leaf Compost when the main goal is improving older soil. Use cakes, meals and natural mineral amendments when their particular nutrients suit the plant and existing soil.

Fertilizer Groups

This collection includes several types of natural fertilizer for plants. They differ in nutrient strength, release speed and effect on the soil.

Vermicompost and Leaf Compost contain decomposed organic matter. Neem Cake and Mustard Cake are plant-based fertilizers left after oil extraction. Bone Meal, Blood Meal, Fish Meal, Crab Meal and Prawn Meal come from processed animal materials.

Rock Phosphate and Wood Ash are natural mineral amendments used in organic gardening. They are not compost or organic matter, but they can supply particular minerals when the soil needs them. Eggshell Powder is also used mainly as a gradual calcium source rather than as complete plant food.

Compost Choices

Vermicompost is made from organic material processed by earthworms. Its fine texture makes it suitable for mixing into potting soil, grow bags, raised beds and open garden soil.

It provides gentle nutrition while adding organic matter around the roots. Mix it through old potting medium before planting or spread a light layer over the soil around established plants. Leave a little space around the main stem.

The regular Vermicompost packs are convenient for pots and smaller gardens. The 30kg pack contains the same type of soil-building material in a larger quantity for several beds, grow bags or frequent potting work.

Leaf Compost is made mainly from decomposed leaves. It is less concentrated than many fertilizer meals, but it is useful for improving soil texture and refreshing beds before seasonal planting.

Mix mature Leaf Compost into garden soil or old potting medium. Properly decomposed compost should have a soil-like appearance without large amounts of fresh material that may continue heating or shrinking.

Plant Cakes

Neem Cake and Mustard Cake are produced after oil is removed from their respective seeds. They release nutrients gradually as moisture and soil organisms break down the remaining material.

Neem Cake is available in regular pieces and powder. The powder spreads more evenly through pots and exposes a larger surface for breakdown. Larger pieces are easier to handle in beds and generally remain visible for longer.

Neem Cake can support general soil care, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed solution for every soil insect or root problem. Apply it for its stated uses and follow the amount given on the product page.

Mustard Cake is also available in regular and crushed forms. Crushed Mustard Cake is easier to distribute through smaller pots, while larger pieces soften and break down more gradually.

Some Mustard Cake products may also include a soaking method in their instructions. Use that method only when it is recommended for the selected product. A young plant requires much less fertilizer than a large, established plant.

Animal Meals

Animal-based fertilizer meals can provide useful nutrients, but they should not be treated as equal products or exchanged in the same amount.

Blood Meal is a concentrated source of nitrogen. It is most suitable where additional nitrogen is genuinely needed. Pale leaves alone do not confirm a nitrogen shortage because damaged roots, excess water, heat and other nutrient problems can produce similar symptoms.

Bone Meal supplies phosphorus and calcium gradually. It is commonly used during soil preparation for roots, bulbs and long-term flowering or fruit plants. Its nutrients release slowly, so applying extra will not create an immediate response.

Fish Meal contains nitrogen, phosphorus and smaller amounts of other nutrients. Crab Meal and Prawn Meal provide their own combinations of organic material, nitrogen, calcium and supporting minerals. Their exact nutrient values and application amounts should be checked on the selected product.

For Prawn Meal, the current product guidance is approximately 2 tablespoons for a pot around 10 inches wide. Adjust the amount for larger or smaller containers and follow the complete instructions provided with the product.

Mineral Sources

Rock Phosphate is a natural mineral source of phosphorus. It releases slowly and is better suited to soil preparation and longer-term garden care than to a plant needing an immediate response.

Its usefulness depends partly on soil conditions. Phosphorus from Rock Phosphate generally becomes available more easily in acidic soil and may remain less available in strongly alkaline soil. Do not automatically combine it with Bone Meal because both supply phosphorus.

Eggshell Powder provides calcium gradually. The fine powder breaks down more easily than large household eggshell pieces, but it is still not an instant calcium treatment. Mix it into the soil instead of leaving a thick white layer on the surface.

Pure Wood Ash contains potassium, calcium and other minerals. It also raises soil alkalinity, so it is not suitable for acid-loving plants or soil that is already strongly alkaline.

Only ash made from clean, untreated wood should be used in garden soil. Ash from painted wood, treated timber, coal, plastic, rubbish or barbecue briquettes may contain unwanted substances.

Pots and Beds

Organic fertilizers behave differently in containers and open beds. A pot holds roots, water and fertilizer inside a limited space, so concentrated materials must be measured more carefully.

Spread fertilizer across the root area rather than placing the full amount in one pocket. Mix dry material gently into the upper soil without damaging surface roots, and keep concentrated fertilizer away from direct contact with the main stem.

Large grow bags and garden beds contain more soil, but they still require measured application. Fertilizer cannot correct a container that remains waterlogged, lacks drainage holes or uses a compacted potting medium.

Feeding Time

Organic fertilizers release nutrients as they break down, so temperature, moisture and soil activity affect their speed. Apply them when plants are actively growing and the soil is moist but not saturated.

Spring and autumn are useful times for refreshing pots and preparing beds in Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Warm-season vegetables, flowers and fruit plants can receive suitable feeding when healthy growth begins.

In Karachi and southern Punjab, avoid heavy feeding while plants are stressed by the strongest summer heat. During monsoon weather, reduce applications where pots or beds remain continuously wet.

Breakdown becomes slower during cold weather in northern and hilly areas. Repeated applications during inactive growth can leave unused material in the soil.

How to Apply

  1. Choose a fertilizer according to the nutrient or soil improvement the plant needs.
  2. Read the product instructions and measure the amount for the pot, grow bag or garden bed.
  3. Spread the material evenly and mix it lightly into the upper soil when directed.
  4. Water after application when required and allow excess moisture to drain.
  5. Wait for the recommended period before applying the same or another fertilizer.

Vermicompost, Blood Meal, Bone Meal and Wood Ash differ greatly in strength and purpose. Do not apply them on the same schedule simply because they appear in the same collection.

Garden Care

  • Selection: Choose according to plant and soil needs.
  • Measurement: Use less for small pots and young plants.
  • Placement: Keep concentrated material away from tender roots and stems.
  • Watering: Maintain moisture without leaving the soil saturated.
  • Drainage: Keep container drainage holes open.
  • Timing: Feed during active growth and reduce feeding during weather stress.

Use separate measuring tools for garden products and wash your hands after handling plant cakes, compost and animal-based meals.

FAQs

Can organic fertilizer burn plant roots?

Yes. Blood Meal, Mustard Cake, Wood Ash and other concentrated materials can damage roots when applied too heavily or placed directly against them. Natural origin does not make unlimited use safe.

Can organic fertilizer be used with NPK?

Both can be part of the same long-term feeding plan, but their nutrients must be counted together. Do not automatically apply the full recommended amount of each at the same time. Consider what has already been added to the soil before applying more.

Why does organic fertilizer develop a strong smell?

Mustard Cake, Fish Meal and other natural materials may smell stronger when they remain wet and exposed. Mix the measured amount into the soil instead of leaving a pile on the surface, and avoid keeping the soil continuously waterlogged.

Are organic fertilizers safe around pets?

Some animal meals and plant cakes can attract cats, dogs, birds or rodents. Store them securely and prevent animals from digging in recently treated soil. Follow any additional precautions stated on the product label.

Why is mould growing after application?

Fungal growth may appear when organic material remains exposed on a damp soil surface. Remove any thick layer, mix the remaining material lightly into the soil and improve airflow. Reduce watering if the potting medium is staying wet for too long.
