Adenium Mix, also called Desert Rose, produces trumpet-shaped flowers in pink, white and two-tone shades above thick, branching stems. Grow it as a feature plant for sunny balconies, patios and container displays.

Native to Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, this long-lived succulent develops a swollen stem base called a caudex. Its small tree-like shape remains attractive between flowering periods, while growing from seed lets you watch the distinctive base develop over time.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • Colourful Flowers: Pink, white and two-tone blooms brighten sunny spaces.
  • Distinctive Shape: The swollen base and branching stems resemble a miniature tree.
  • Lasting Plant: Can be grown for several years with suitable care.
  • Pot Friendly: Makes an attractive individual feature in a container.
  • Drought Tolerant: Established plants store water in their thick stems.
  • Seed Quality: Germination-tested Adenium seeds with a high germination rate.

Best Conditions

  • Germination: Usually 7–14 days
  • Germination temperature: Around 25–30°C
  • Seedling light: Bright, filtered light
  • Sunlight: At least 6 hours once established
  • Pot size: Start small; an 8–12-inch pot suits an established plant
  • Spacing: One plant per pot
  • Plant height: Can reach around 3–5 feet with age; often smaller in pots
  • Soil: Loose, fast-draining mix with perlite, pumice or coarse sand
  • First flowers: May begin around 12 months from seed; some plants take longer

Sowing note: As a temperature-based guide, sow from March to May in Lahore and Faisalabad, and from April to May in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. In Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from February to April. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from May to June once frost has passed and conditions are consistently warm.

How to Sow

  1. Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 2–4 hours, then drain.
  2. Fill small pots with moist, free-draining seed mix.
  3. Lay one seed flat in each pot and press gently.
  4. Cover with a thin sprinkling of mix and mist lightly.
  5. Keep the mix lightly moist until the seedlings appear.
  6. Repot after six true leaves develop, keeping the root ball intact.

Plant Care

Water established plants thoroughly, then let the mix begin drying before watering again. Young seedlings need more consistent moisture, but neither seedlings nor mature plants should stand in water. Reduce watering sharply when cool weather slows growth.

Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the potting mix without making it heavy or moisture-retentive. Check leaves and stems for aphids, mealybugs and spider mites. If needed, apply Neem Oil according to its label during the cooler part of the day.

Local Gardener Tips

  • Introduce young plants to direct sunlight gradually.
  • Provide light afternoon shade during extreme summer heat.
  • Shelter pots from prolonged monsoon rain.
  • Move plants to a protected location before cold winter nights.

Flowering and Display

Give established plants a bright position where their flowers and swollen bases can be seen clearly. Too much shade encourages stretched stems and reduces flowering.

Repot during warm, active growth when the roots have filled their container. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the previous one, as excess unused potting mix stays wet longer.

FAQs

Will every plant have the colours shown in the photos?

Individual seedlings can differ in flower colour and markings. A mixed seed pack does not guarantee every pictured colour, and the final appearance becomes clear when each plant flowers.

Does Adenium need grafting before it can flower?

No. Seed-grown Adenium can flower on its own. Grafting is used to reproduce particular flower colours or forms from a selected plant.

Why is the swollen stem becoming soft or dark?

Persistent softness, dark patches or a foul smell can indicate rot. Inspect the roots and base promptly. Affected tissue may need removing with a clean tool, with the remaining healthy tissue kept dry while the wound heals.
