Butterfly Pea Blue is a warm-season climbing vine known for its rich blue, pea-shaped flowers. Also called Aparajita, it grows well during Pakistan’s spring and monsoon seasons and can be trained over balcony grills, fences, trellises and arches.
The flowers make the vine useful for more than ornamental planting. Fresh or dried blooms are traditionally used for blue tea and herbal infusions, while their natural pigment can colour drinks, rice, desserts and other foods. Adding lemon or another acidic ingredient can shift the colour from blue towards purple.

Sowing
- Soak the seeds in water overnight, or gently scratch the hard seed coat before sowing.
- Use either method. Both are not necessary for the same seed.
- Sow about ½ to 1 inch deep in a light, well-draining growing mix.
- Sow directly beside a permanent climbing support or start each seed in a separate small pot.

- Keep the growing mix warm and lightly moist, but not waterlogged.
- Once seedlings develop 2 to 3 true leaves, transplant them carefully.
- Keep the soil around the roots intact to reduce disturbance.

- Space vines about 8 to 12 inches apart along a fence or trellis.
- For one plant, use a container at least 12 to 14 inches wide and 10 to 12 inches deep.
