Collection: Summer Vegetable Seeds (گرمی کی سبزیوں کے بیج)

Grow summer vegetables at home using fresh hybrid and desi seed varieties. Our collection includes okra, tinda, sponge gourd, bitter gourd, and tomatoes — all suited for pots, beds, or grow bags. Seeds are easy to germinate and ideal for Pakistan’s hot growing season, whether on rooftops or in kitchen gardens.

Summer vegetable seeds are suitable for the warm growing months when rising temperatures support active plant growth, flowering and vegetable formation. This collection includes Desi and F1 hybrid options for home gardens, pots, grow bags, raised beds and rooftop spaces.

Summer vegetables in Pakistan include upright plants such as bhindi, chilli, capsicum, brinjal and tomato, along with climbing vegetables such as cucumber, kakri, karela, lauki and tori. Tinda, pumpkin, melon and watermelon need more room for their spreading vines. Choosing according to the available space makes the summer garden easier to manage.

Summer Vegetables

Bhindi: Lady finger grows well during warm weather and is suitable for sunny home gardens. Its upright growth makes it manageable in individual pots and grow bags. Both Desi and F1 varieties are available.

Chilli and capsicum: These branching plants can be grown in containers or garden beds. Gardeners can choose Desi chilli, bullet chilli, jalapeño and F1 capsicums with different colours, shapes and heat levels.

Brinjal: Brinjal appreciates warmth and direct sunlight. Desi and hybrid varieties differ in fruit colour, shape and size, while the mature branching plant benefits from a wide container.

Tomato: Tomato seeds are available in Desi, F1 hybrid, round and cherry varieties for cooking, salads and sauces. Browse the complete Tomato Seeds collection to compare more options.

Cucumber and kakri: These fast-growing vines can be guided along a trellis, fence or rooftop frame. Regular picking helps keep the vegetables tender.

Gourds: Karela, lauki and tori are familiar summer vegetables in Pakistani home gardens. Their vigorous vines need a strong trellis with enough space for developing vegetables.

Tinda: Round gourd develops shorter trailing vines than many large gourds. It can be grown in a roomy container or garden bed with space around the plant.

Melons and watermelon: Melon, garma and watermelon grow as spreading vines. They are better suited to open ground, raised beds or very large containers where the vines can extend without crowding other plants.

Warm-weather leaves: Malabar spinach is a climbing leafy vegetable that handles summer conditions better than regular spinach. Its stems can be trained upward to save ground space.

Plan Your Space

Bhindi, chilli, capsicum, brinjal and many tomato varieties grow upright or form compact branching plants. Give each mature plant its own container so the roots have enough room and neighbouring plants are not crowded.

Cucumber, kakri, bitter gourd, bottle gourd and sponge gourd use vertical space when trained on a trellis. Install the support while the plants are young to avoid disturbing established roots later.

Pumpkin, melon and watermelon spread across a wider area. Place them near the edge of a bed or open space where their vines can extend without covering smaller plants.

Desi or Hybrid

Desi vegetable seeds include traditional varieties valued by Pakistani gardeners for their familiar taste and established place in local cooking. The collection may include Desi bhindi, tinda, karela, lauki, tori, cucumber, brinjal, chilli and other seasonal choices.

F1 hybrid vegetable seeds are developed for defined characteristics such as vegetable shape, colour, plant habit and maturity time. Hybrid options are available for tomato, chilli, capsicum, brinjal, cucumber, lady finger, tinda and several gourds.

Desi and hybrid are separate variety groups, but one is not automatically better for every home garden. Compare the product description, available space and preferred vegetable type before choosing.

Sowing Time

In Lahore and Faisalabad, sow most summer vegetable seeds from February to April. Tomato, chilli, capsicum and brinjal can be started in trays from January to March so established seedlings are ready as conditions become warmer.

In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, February to April provides the main sowing period after the coldest weather has passed.

In Karachi, many summer vegetables can be started from January to March. Tomato, chilli, brinjal and cucumber may also be started from August to October for growth during the milder months.

In southern Punjab, February to March provides the main spring sowing window. Some gardeners make another sowing during July and August for late-summer and autumn growth, provided drainage and rain protection are managed.

In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the risk of hard frost has passed. Local temperatures and the instructions supplied with each variety should take priority over a fixed calendar date.

Starting Method

Start tomato, chilli, capsicum and brinjal in a seedling tray. Move them into their final containers or beds after they develop 3 to 4 true leaves and a firm root system.

Bhindi, tinda, cucumber, kakri, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, sponge gourd, pumpkin, melon and watermelon generally establish better when sown in their final positions.

Cover bhindi, cucumber, tinda and most gourd seeds with approximately ½ to 1 inch of loose growing medium, depending on seed size. Do not press the surface too firmly.

Place two or three seeds at each final position. Once the seedlings become established, retain the healthiest one without pulling against the roots of the remaining plant.

Container Sizes

  • Chilli and compact capsicum: One plant in a 10 to 12-inch container
  • Bhindi: One plant in a pot or grow bag approximately 12 inches wide
  • Brinjal: One plant in a container approximately 14 to 18 inches wide
  • Tomato: One plant in a container approximately 14 to 20 inches wide
  • Cucumber and tinda: One plant in a 15 to 20-gallon grow bag
  • Large gourds: One vine in a 20-gallon or larger grow bag
  • Pumpkin and watermelon: One plant in a very large container or open garden bed

Explore grow bags in different sizes for balcony, rooftop and home-garden planting. Containers must have open drainage holes because waterlogged growing medium can damage roots during summer rain.

Summer Care

Give fruiting and climbing vegetables approximately 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight. Malabar spinach can manage with a slightly shorter period of direct light, especially during intense afternoon heat.

Water deeply around the roots during the morning. Check the growing medium again when the upper layer begins drying rather than following the same watering schedule throughout the season. Containers may need more frequent attention during hot, dry and windy weather.

Feed established plants with a balanced vegetable fertilizer. After flowering begins, apply a suitable fruiting fertilizer or potash as needed and according to the product directions.

Check new shoots, flower buds and the undersides of leaves for aphids, whiteflies, mites and other small insects. Addressing a problem early is easier than treating a heavily affected plant.

FAQs

How many summer vegetables should a beginner grow?

Start with four or five types that use space differently. A manageable combination may include two upright plants, one bhindi plant, one trellised cucumber or gourd and one Malabar spinach plant. This provides variety without making watering, support and pest checks difficult.

How can I help gourd flowers form vegetables?

Gourds produce separate male and female flowers. Bees usually transfer pollen between them, but hand pollination can help when visiting insects are limited. During the morning, move pollen from a freshly opened male flower to the centre of an open female flower.

Why do seedlings wilt after transplanting?

Newly transplanted seedlings may lose moisture while their roots adjust to the new growing medium. Transplant during late afternoon, water thoroughly and provide light shade for the first two or three days. Avoid moving very small or weak seedlings.

How often should summer vegetables be picked?

Bhindi, cucumber and tender gourds can be checked every one to two days during active fruiting. Regular picking prevents them from becoming oversized and encourages the plants to continue forming flowers.

Can summer vegetables grow during monsoon weather?

Many summer vegetables continue growing during the monsoon, but standing water, weak airflow and prolonged leaf wetness can cause problems. Use raised containers, quick-draining growing medium, open spacing and secure trellises during periods of frequent rain.
