Choosing Grow Bags for Summer Flowers and Vegetables
The right grow-bag size depends on the mature plant rather than the size of the seedling at transplanting.
For Chilli and compact Capsicum, grow one plant in a 10 × 11-inch grow bag.
For Lady Finger and Brinjal, use one plant per 12 × 12-inch HDPE grow bag or 13 × 13-inch grow bag. The 13 × 13-inch option gives larger Brinjal plants more root room and holds additional growing medium for exposed rooftops.
Grow one full-sized Tomato plant in a 10-gallon grow bag. Its larger soil volume provides more room for mature roots and retains moisture longer than a smaller bag.
For Cucumber, Bitter Gourd, Bottle Gourd and Sponge Gourd, use one vigorous vine per 20-gallon grow bag with a secure trellis.
Pumpkin, Melon and Watermelon are easier to manage in garden soil. Where container growing is necessary, use one plant per 35-gallon grow bag and leave enough surrounding space for the vines to spread.
