Plant Types
Foliage plants provide colour and texture even when they are not flowering. Kochia develops fine, soft-looking growth and can form a rounded plant when given direct sunlight and enough room to branch. Burning Bush Kochia may gradually develop bronze or red colouring as it matures, although the final colour also depends on temperature, sunlight and variety.
Flowering Kale forms a broad rosette with a colourful centre during cool weather. Its display may include green, cream, white, pink or purple shades. True Lavender offers a different effect through its narrow grey-green leaves, fragrance and purple flowers. It needs stronger drainage than Flowering Kale, particularly during humid or rainy weather.
Ornamental Pepper or Sajawati Mirch (سجاوٹی مرچ) develops compact growth with small upright peppers that may change through several colours as they mature. Interest in ornamental pepper seeds and ornamental chilli seeds is increasing, but these plants should be grown for their decorative appearance unless the individual variety is specifically identified for eating.
Balloon Vine is valued for its light climbing growth and inflated seed pods. It can cover a railing, arch or small trellis without using much floor space. Ornamental Corn creates a taller display and later develops mature cobs with unusual colours or patterns. These plants are useful where height, movement or decorative seed features are wanted.
Ornamental flower seeds are suitable for seasonal pots and borders, while ornamental tree seeds serve a longer-term purpose. Sowing Time
The correct sowing period depends on whether the selected plant prefers warm or cool conditions. Flowering Kale performs best as temperatures begin to fall, while Kochia, Ornamental Pepper, Balloon Vine and Ornamental Corn establish during warmer periods. Tree seeds are commonly started in spring or near the beginning of the monsoon period.
In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow Flowering Kale and Lavender from September through November. Start warm-season ornamental seeds from February through April. A second round of suitable warm-season varieties may be started during July and August as the strongest heat begins to ease.
In Karachi, Flowering Kale and Lavender can be started from October into December. Warm-season ornamental plants can be sown from January through March or from August through October, depending on rainfall and humidity.
In southern Punjab, October and November suit cool-season ornamental plants. Start warm-season varieties during February and March, with another possible window during July and August when conditions begin improving.
In colder northern and hilly areas, Flowering Kale can be started from August through October. Sow Lavender, Kochia, Ornamental Pepper and other warm-season plants from March through April after the risk of hard frost has passed.
Local temperature is more important than a fixed calendar date. Avoid starting cool-season plants during severe heat, and protect newly emerged warm-season seedlings from unexpected cold or prolonged heavy rain.
Seed Preparation
Small seeds need shallow sowing. Bottlebrush seeds are extremely fine and should have surface contact with the growing mixture or only a very light covering. Kochia and Jacaranda seeds should also be sown shallowly. Do not bury too deep.
Gul Mohar and Amaltas have firm outer seed coats. Lightly rubbing or carefully nicking the outer coat, followed by soaking, can help water reach the seed. Avoid cutting deeply enough to damage the inner part.
Larger seeds such as Balloon Vine and Ornamental Corn can be planted directly in their final position once suitable warm conditions arrive. Flowering Kale, Ornamental Pepper and Lavender are usually easier to manage in separate tray cells before transplanting.

A full Kochia plant benefits from a container around 10 to 14 inches wide. One plant per pot develops a more even shape, while several plants can be spaced along a pathway or boundary to create a temporary seasonal border.
Balloon Vine needs a container around 12 to 14 inches wide and deep, together with a secure climbing support. Place the support beside the young plant so the stems can begin climbing early.
Ornamental Corn performs better when several plants are grown together in an open bed or wide container. This arrangement supports wind pollination and creates a stronger group display. Tall corn and climbing plants may need additional support in exposed rooftop gardens.
Tree seedlings can begin in nursery pots and move into progressively larger containers as their roots develop. Plant them in open ground once an appropriate permanent position has been prepared.
