Flowering Kale forms a broad rosette of deeply curled green leaves surrounding a colourful centre. Depending on the plant, the centre may develop white, pink, red or purple shades. Grow it in pots, borders, along pathways or in grouped winter displays.

The plant develops its strongest colour during cool weather and remains attractive when many warm-season flowers have finished. Its compact shape and layered leaves resemble a large decorative bloom.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • Winter Colour: Brightens pots and garden beds during cool weather.
  • Frilled Leaves: Forms a full rosette with deeply curled edges.
  • Cold Tolerant: Handles low temperatures and light frost once established.
  • Long Display: The coloured leaves remain attractive for several weeks.
  • Pot Friendly: One plant creates a complete display in a suitable container.

Best Conditions

  • Germination: Usually 4–10 days
  • Germination temperature: Around 21–24°C
  • Growing temperature: Around 10–21°C
  • Sunlight: At least 6 hours
  • Pot size: A 12–14-inch pot for one plant
  • Spacing: About 12–14 inches between plants
  • Plant height: Usually around 8–15 inches
  • Soil: Moist, fertile and well-draining mix
  • First colour: Usually around 12–14 weeks

In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from August to September so the plants mature as the weather cools. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from September to October and keep the seed tray protected from heat. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from July to August for autumn colour, or from March to April after severe frost has passed.

How to Sow

  1. Fill a seed tray or small pots with fine, moist seed starter mix.
  2. Sow the seeds around ¼ inch deep.
  3. Cover lightly, water gently and place the tray in a bright location.
  4. Thin or transplant the seedlings after they develop 3–4 true leaves.
  5. Move them to their final pots or garden positions after the strongest heat has eased.

Plant Care

Keep the soil evenly moist while the rosette is developing, but do not leave the roots in standing water. Remove yellow or badly damaged outer leaves without disturbing the centre.

Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the soil before transplanting. Avoid frequent feeding because excessive fertilizer can produce loose green growth and delay strong centre colour.

Check underneath the leaves for aphids, cabbage caterpillars and insect eggs. Remove visible caterpillars and eggs by hand. If aphids appear, spray Neem Oil on the affected leaves, including their undersides.

Local Gardener Tips

  • Raise seedlings in a protected place during late-summer heat.
  • Give the plants maximum sunlight during winter.
  • Grow one plant in each 12–14-inch pot.
  • Avoid excessive fertilizer after the rosette begins forming.

Colouring

The centre begins changing colour after the plant reaches a suitable size and experiences cool nights. Stronger shades usually develop when temperatures fall below approximately 10–13°C.

Display the plants where their colourful centres can be seen from above. They work well alone in pots or alongside pansies, petunias, snapdragons and other cool-season plants. The rosette may remain decorative for several weeks before warmer weather causes the central stem to stretch.

FAQs

Why is the centre remaining green?

The plant may still be immature, or the nights may be too warm. Strong colouring usually appears after mature plants experience cool temperatures for several days.

Why is my Flowering Kale growing tall instead of forming a compact rosette?

Warm weather, weak sunlight or crowded plants can cause stretched growth. A mature plant may also grow taller when it begins preparing to flower.
