In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from February to April, or again from late July to August for an autumn display. In Karachi and other frost-free coastal areas, sow from January to March or August to October. In southern Punjab, sow from February to March, or again from August to September after the strongest heat has eased. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to May after severe cold has passed.
How to Sow
- Fill a seed tray or small pots with fine, moist seed-starting mix.
- Sow one seed in each cell or place the seeds thinly in the tray.
- Barely cover them with around ⅛–¼ inch of fine mix.
- Mist gently and cover the tray until seedlings begin appearing.
- Transplant carefully at 3–4 true leaves, keeping the roots and surrounding mix together.
Plant Care
Water when the surface of the soil begins to dry. Keep the moisture fairly even while flowers and peppers are developing, but never leave the pot standing in collected water.
If a young plant grows tall with few branches, pinch out its top growing point before flower buds appear. Naturally compact plants may not need pinching.
Mix a small amount of compost into the final potting mix before transplanting. Once buds begin forming, feed lightly with a flowering fertilizer every 3–4 weeks. Excessive nitrogen can produce many leaves with fewer colourful peppers.
Check the tender growth for aphids, whiteflies and spider mites. If they appear, apply Neem Oil to the affected leaves while avoiding open flowers. Remove spotted or badly damaged leaves and maintain airflow around the plant.
