Seed Details

Best Time

Sow Gul Mohar when the weather is warm and there is no risk of frost.

In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, February to April is a suitable sowing period. Seeds can also be started near the end of the monsoon while the weather remains warm.

In Karachi and warmer parts of southern Punjab, sow from February to March or from August to September. Protect newly emerged seedlings from extreme afternoon heat.

In colder and hilly areas, wait until spring after frost has passed.

Seed Preparation

Gul Mohar seeds have a hard outer coat. Preparing this coat helps water reach the inside of the seed.

1. Rub one small area of the seed lightly with sandpaper.
2. Stop when the coat becomes thinner or a lighter colour appears.
3. Do not grind deeply into the seed.
4. Soak the prepared seeds in lukewarm water for 12 to 24 hours.
5. Sow the seeds that have swollen as soon as possible.

Seeds that remain hard can be rubbed a little more and soaked again.

How to Sow

1. Fill small pots or nursery bags with loose, well-draining soilless potting mix.
2. Sow one prepared seed in each container.
3. Cover with approximately ½ to 1 inch of growing medium.
4. Water gently and keep the mixture evenly moist.
5. Place the containers in a warm position with bright filtered light.
6. Move the seedlings gradually into stronger sunlight after they become established.

Do not keep the growing medium constantly wet. Warmth, moisture and proper seed preparation are more important than frequent watering.

Transplanting

Transplant the seedlings when they have several true leaves and their roots hold the growing medium together.

Water before transplanting, remove the root ball carefully and plant it at the same depth. Keep the young tree protected from harsh afternoon sunlight for a few days while it settles.

Gul Mohar develops into a large tree and should eventually be planted in open ground. A pot or nursery bag is suitable for raising a young seedling but is not a permanent location for a normally growing tree.

Tree Care

Plant Gul Mohar in full sun for strong growth and flowering. Water young trees regularly during their establishment period, allowing excess water to drain away.

Once established, the tree tolerates dry periods reasonably well. Poorly drained soil and constant watering can weaken the roots.

Mixing some vermicompost fertilizer into poor soil can support early growth. Avoid placing concentrated fertilizer directly against young roots.

Prune the young tree gradually to develop a strong central structure and well-spaced branches.

Choose Space

A mature Gul Mohar forms a broad, spreading canopy and large surface roots. Plant it in a spacious location away from buildings, boundary walls, drains, overhead wires and paved areas.

Avoid planting it directly beside paths or driveways. Surface roots can lift paving when the tree is positioned too close.

How long does Gul Mohar take to flower?

A tree grown from seed normally takes several years to reach flowering maturity. Sunlight, climate, soil, watering and available growing space affect how quickly it develops.

Why did the seeds remain hard after soaking?

The outer coat may not have been rubbed enough for water to enter. Lightly sand one small area again and repeat the soaking process.

Can Gul Mohar survive frost?

Young Gul Mohar trees are sensitive to frost. Protect seedlings from cold wind and delay outdoor planting in colder areas until the weather becomes reliably warm.

Does Gul Mohar lose its leaves?

It may remain partly evergreen in warm conditions but can shed leaves during cooler or dry periods. This is normal and does not necessarily mean the tree has died.

Can Gul Mohar be grown as bonsai?

It can be trained as bonsai with regular root and branch pruning. Without this specialised training, it naturally develops into a large spreading tree.
