Some plants root more easily than others. Rooting powder improves the conditions for root formation but cannot guarantee that every cutting will survive.
Taking Cuttings
Choose a healthy stem without serious pest or disease damage. For many plants, a cutting approximately 4 to 6 inches long is suitable.
Use a sharp, clean pruner or knife. Make the cut below a node, then remove the lower leaves while keeping the upper leaves attached. Remove flowers and buds so the cutting can direct more energy towards root development.
Keep prepared cuttings protected from direct sunlight and do not allow them to dry before planting.
How to Use
- Fill a clean pot or tray with a moist, light rooting medium and make a planting hole.
- Pour a small amount of RootBoost into a separate shallow dish.
- Lightly moisten the lower end of the cutting.
- Dip the tip and at least one exposed node into the powder, then tap off the excess.
- Insert the cutting into the prepared hole, press the medium gently around it and place it in bright indirect light.
Do not mix the powder with water. Do not dip cuttings directly into the original pack because moisture and plant material can contaminate the remaining powder.
Discard any unused powder left in the separate dish after finishing.
Rooting Medium
Use a clean medium that holds enough moisture for the cutting while allowing air around the developing roots. Suitable options include perlite, sand, a light potting mixture or a prepared seed starter mix.
Moisten the medium before inserting the cutting. Making the planting hole first prevents the powder from being rubbed away as the stem enters the medium.
Ordinary garden soil can become heavy inside small propagation pots and may remain wet for too long.
After Planting
Keep the rooting medium evenly moist but not soaked. Check it regularly and add water gently when the upper surface begins drying.
Place the cutting in bright indirect light. Harsh direct sunlight can cause rapid moisture loss before the cutting has developed roots.
A clear cover or plastic bag can help maintain humidity, but it should not press against the leaves. Open it regularly to allow some fresh air and remove leaves that begin rotting.
Transplant the cutting after it has formed a healthy root system and begins producing new growth.
Best Results
Take cuttings while the parent plant is actively growing. Soft stems and young woody stems generally respond better than old, hard branches.
Use clean tools, containers and rooting medium. A rooting hormone cannot prevent failure caused by diseased stems, contaminated equipment or constantly wet conditions.
Avoid applying a heavy coating. A thin, even layer over the prepared end and exposed node is sufficient.
Storage
Close the pack firmly after use and keep it in a cool, dry place. Protect the powder from moisture, direct sunlight and excessive heat.
