Arugula Microgreens produce tender green leaves on slender pale stems, with a fresh and mildly sharp rocket-like flavour. Use them in salads, sandwiches, wraps, eggs, pasta, noodles, rice or as a fresh topping for cooked meals.

Also known as Rocket Lettuce, Arugula germinates quickly and can be grown in a shallow tray throughout the year. The small seeds do not require soaking, making them suitable for beginners growing microgreens at home.

Why Grow It

  • Fresh Flavour: Adds the familiar taste of young rocket leaves to meals.
  • Quick Harvest: Usually ready within 8–12 days.
  • Small Spaces: Suitable for kitchen counters, balconies and bright indoor areas.
  • Easy Sowing: Small seeds can be sown directly without soaking.
  • Year-Round Growing: Can be grown indoors during any season.

Best Conditions

  • Germination: Usually 2–4 days
  • Harvest: Around 8–12 days
  • Temperature: Around 18–24°C
  • Light: Bright, indirect light after germination
  • Tray: A shallow tray around 1–2 inches deep
  • Seed amount: Approximately 15–20g per 10 × 20-inch tray
  • Pack coverage: One 5g pack is suitable for a small home tray
  • Seed soaking: Not required
  • Growing mix: Coco peat or fine seed starter mix

Arugula Microgreens can be grown throughout the year in Pakistan. Keep the tray in a bright and airy indoor or sheltered location. During hot weather, protect the young leaves from direct afternoon sunlight. Provide gentle airflow during humid and monsoon conditions.

How to Grow

  1. Fill a clean shallow tray with 1–1½ inches of moist coco peat or seed starter mix.
  2. Spread the dry seeds evenly over the surface without forming thick piles.
  3. Press them gently against the growing mix and mist thoroughly.
  4. Cover the tray for approximately 2–3 days, checking daily to prevent the surface from drying.
  5. Remove the cover after most seedlings emerge, then provide bright indirect light and water from below.

Plant Care

Check the growing mix daily after removing the cover. Add water to the lower tray whenever the surface begins drying. Keep the mix moist without leaving the roots standing in water.

Rotate the tray regularly so the seedlings receive even light. Insufficient light can produce long, weak stems, while strong afternoon sunlight may dry the shallow tray quickly.

Extra fertilizer is usually unnecessary during the short growing period. Gentle airflow helps prevent moisture from remaining trapped between the closely growing stems.

Local Gardener Tips

  • Do not soak Arugula seeds before sowing.
  • Separate any seed clumps before they become sticky from moisture.
  • Avoid sowing thick piles that can trap excess moisture.
  • Keep the uncovered tray away from strong afternoon sunlight.
  • Sow a fresh small tray every week for a regular supply.

Harvesting

Harvest when the stems are approximately 2–3 inches tall and the seed leaves have fully opened, usually 8–12 days after sowing.

Use clean scissors to cut the stems just above the growing mix. Avoid including roots or coco peat with the harvested greens. Rinse with clean water, drain well and use while fresh.

FAQs

Why is there a clear gel around the wet seeds?

Arugula seeds naturally form a clear, sticky coating after absorbing water. This is normal and helps the seeds retain moisture. Avoid disturbing them repeatedly after sowing because the wet seeds can stick together.

Why is germination uneven across the tray?

Uneven germination can result from seeds gathering in thick patches, dry areas in the growing mix or poor contact between the seeds and the surface. Spread the seeds evenly, press them gently into place and maintain consistent moisture.

Can Arugula Microgreens grow without coco peat?

They can be grown on a fine microgreens mat that holds moisture evenly. The seeds are small and become sticky when wet, so coco peat or fine seed starter mix is generally easier for home growers than wide mesh or coarse material.
