Valerian is a tall perennial herb with divided green leaves and rounded clusters of fragrant, pale pink to white flowers. It creates an attractive background in herb beds and cottage-style gardens while drawing bees and butterflies during flowering.

Native to Europe and parts of Asia, Valerian prefers cool weather and moist soil. Its roots have a strong, distinctive aroma and a long history of traditional herbal use.

Starting Valerian from Seed

Press seeds firmly onto the surface of moist seed-starting mix and leave them exposed to light. Keep the mix moist at about 18–20°C while they germinate. Grow seedlings on until they are 5–6 inches tall, then plant them 12–18 inches apart in moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade.

Common names: Valerian, Common Valerian, Garden Heliotrope
