Best Time

Sweet William prefers cool weather. In most parts of Pakistan, sow from late September to November so the plants can become established during autumn and winter.

In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from late September to November. Give the young plants sunny conditions during winter and protect them from sudden periods of heavy rain.

In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from October to December after the strongest summer heat has eased. Plants benefit from full winter sun but may need afternoon protection as spring temperatures rise.

In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the risk of hard frost has passed. Seeds can also be started in a protected location before outdoor conditions become suitable.

How to Sow

1. Fill a seed tray or small pots with a fine, moist seed-starting mixture.
2. Sow the seeds thinly and press them gently against the surface.
3. Cover them with no more than 0.3 cm of fine mixture.
4. Water carefully with a fine spray and keep at approximately 18-22°C.
5. Transplant after the seedlings develop 2-3 true leaves.
