Vroege Zelfsluitende is an early sugarloaf chicory that forms upright green heads with tightly folded, paler inner leaves. The crisp leaves have a pleasantly bitter flavour and can be eaten fresh in salads or lightly cooked.

This cool-season leafy vegetable is easy to grow and tolerates light frost. It performs best when sown directly in its final pot or garden bed, as established seedlings dislike root disturbance.
