Ruta, commonly called Rue, is an aromatic perennial herb with blue-green leaves and clusters of small yellow flowers. Its compact, bushy growth adds unusual colour and texture to herb gardens, borders and large pots.

Native to the Mediterranean region, Ruta handles warm weather and established plants tolerate short dry periods. Its flowers also attract bees and other visiting insects.

Starting Rue from Seed

Press seeds into moist seed-starting mix and cover only just below the surface, leaving the tray in the light. Keep it moist at about 16–21°C. Once seedlings are several inches tall, transplant them about 2 feet apart in a sunny position with freely draining soil.
