Petunia Black F1 Hybrid forms neat, branching plants covered with large, trumpet-shaped flowers that appear velvety black. The unusually dark blooms stand out against fresh green leaves and look especially striking beside white, yellow, silver or pale pink flowers. Its mounded growth suits pots, hanging baskets, window boxes and sunny borders.

Modern Garden Petunias were developed from species native to South America. Black F1 hybrids are selected for their deep flower colour and consistent growth. In Pakistan, they perform best from winter into early spring while the days are sunny and temperatures remain mild.

In Lahore and Faisalabad, sow from September to November, or again from late January to February for spring flowers. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from October to December after the strongest heat has eased. In colder northern and hilly areas, start seeds in protected trays from February to April and move the seedlings outside after the risk of hard frost has passed.

How to Sow

Petunia seeds are extremely small and need light to germinate. Start them in a tray where surface moisture is easier to manage.

1. Fill a tray or cell pack with fine, moist seed starter mix.
2. Place one seed in each cell or scatter them thinly.
3. Press the seeds gently without covering them with soil.
4. Water the surface gently using a fine spray.
5. Cover with clear plastic and keep in bright, indirect light.
6. Remove the cover as soon as the seedlings begin appearing.
7. Transplant at 3–4 true leaves, leaving 10–14 inches between plants.

Plant Care

Water when the surface of the potting mix begins to dry. Keep the roots evenly moist during flowering, but never leave the container standing in water. Apply water near the soil during the morning so the leaves and flowers remain dry.

Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the final potting mix before transplanting. Add another small amount after 4–6 weeks if growth slows or the leaves become pale. Avoid heavy feeding because excessive nitrogen can produce soft leaves with fewer flowers.

Check the tender growth for aphids, whiteflies, spider mites and thrips. If they appear, spray Neem Oil on the affected leaves while avoiding open flowers.

Plants usually begin flowering around 10–14 weeks after sowing. Remove each faded flower together with the small swollen section below it before seeds begin developing.

If the stems become long and untidy after the first display, trim them back by about one-third. Fresh side growth and flower buds can develop while the weather remains suitable.
