Naughty Marietta is a compact French Marigold with golden-yellow flowers marked by deep maroon patches at the base of the petals. The open blooms have raised golden centres, creating a patterned display in pots, window boxes and garden edging.

Finely divided green foliage forms a low, bushy mound beneath the flowers. This Buzzy selection stays short, making it useful along pathways and at the front of beds where taller plants would hide smaller flowers.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • Contrasting Colours: Golden-yellow petals carry bold maroon markings.
  • Compact Growth: Forms low, bushy plants suited to small garden spaces.
  • Repeated Flowering: Produces fresh blooms over several weeks with regular deadheading.
  • Container Friendly: Suitable for pots, window boxes and shallow border displays.
  • Pollinator Friendly: The open flowers attract bees and butterflies.

Best Conditions

  • Germination: Usually 5–14 days
  • Germination temperature: Around 21–24°C
  • Sunlight: At least 6 hours
  • Pot size: An 8–10-inch pot for one plant
  • Spacing: About 8–10 inches between plants
  • Plant height: Around 8 inches
  • Soil: Moderately fertile, moist and well-draining mix
  • First flowers: Usually around 8–12 weeks from sowing

Sowing note: In Lahore and Faisalabad, sow from September to November, or again from February to March. In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from September to October, or from March to April after frost. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from October to November, or from January to February. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from April to May after frost has passed.

How to Sow

  1. Moisten fine seed starter mix and fill a seed tray or small pots.
  2. Lay the seeds flat, leaving small gaps so seedlings can be lifted separately.
  3. Cover with around ¼ inch of fine mix and water gently to settle.
  4. Keep the mix lightly moist and remove any cover as soon as shoots appear.
  5. Lift seedlings carefully by a leaf and pot individually after 3–4 true leaves develop.
  6. Acclimatise the seedlings outdoors gradually, then plant them at their original soil level.

Plant Care

Water at the base when the upper inch of soil begins drying, allowing excess water to drain. Remove faded flowers with their short stalks, cutting back to the next healthy leaf joint. This prevents old blooms from collecting among developing buds.

Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the soil before planting. Feed lightly because excessive fertilizer encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers. If leaves become finely speckled or develop webbing, check underneath for spider mites and treat affected foliage with Neem Oil at its labelled dilution.

Local Gardener Tips

  • Protect autumn-sown pots from overnight frost, removing any temporary cover during the day.
  • During damp, foggy weather, remove damaged flowers before they soften against the foliage.
  • Rotate balcony pots occasionally if the plants begin leaning towards the light.

Flowering and Display

Plant Naughty Marietta along the front of taller flower beds or arrange several pots together for a low band of yellow and maroon. Blue or purple petunias, alyssum and other low bedding plants make useful colour companions.

A few freshly opened flowers can also be cut for small vases. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline and place the stems in clean water promptly.

FAQs

Why does the packet say “African Marigold”?

The botanical name printed on the packet is Tagetes patula, the species commonly known as French Marigold. African Marigolds belong to a different species, Tagetes erecta.

Can I save seeds from Naughty Marietta?

Yes. Leave a few healthy flower heads to become completely brown and dry, then separate the slender seeds and store them in a labelled paper envelope. Nearby French Marigold varieties may cross-pollinate, so flowers grown from saved seeds can vary.
