Green Lentil Microgreens produce slender green shoots with small paired leaves. They have a mild, fresh and slightly sweet flavour similar to young pea shoots. Add them to salads, sandwiches, wraps, raita, eggs, rice, noodles, soups and stir-fries.

The large seeds are easy to handle and develop sturdy shoots after soaking. They grow well in shallow trays and are generally ready to harvest within 10–14 days.

Why Grow It

  • Mild Flavour: Fresh and slightly sweet, without a strong taste.
  • Sturdy Shoots: Produces crisp stems with tender green leaves.
  • Easy Sowing: The large seeds are simple to soak and spread.
  • Quick Harvest: Usually ready within 10–14 days.
  • Small Space: Suitable for kitchens, balconies and sunny windows.

Best Conditions

  • Soaking time: Around 8–12 hours
  • Germination: Usually 2–4 days
  • Temperature: Around 18–24°C
  • Light: Bright, indirect light after germination
  • Tray depth: Around 1–2 inches
  • Harvest height: Around 3–4 inches
  • Growing mix: Moist coco peat or fine seed starter mix

Green Lentil Microgreens can be grown indoors throughout the year in Pakistan. During hot weather, keep the tray in a cooler, airy place away from direct afternoon sunlight.

How to Grow

  1. Rinse the seeds, soak them in clean water for 8–12 hours and drain thoroughly.
  2. Fill a clean tray with drainage holes with 1–1½ inches of moist coco peat or fine seed starter mix.
  3. Spread the seeds closely in a single layer, press them gently against the mix and mist lightly.
  4. Place another tray on top with a light weight and keep covered for 2–3 days, checking daily.
  5. Remove the cover when the shoots begin lifting it, then provide bright, indirect light and water from below.

Plant Care

Keep the growing mix lightly moist without leaving it soaked. Lentil seeds hold plenty of moisture after soaking, so heavy watering during the first few days can cause them to rot.

Water from below once the roots are established. Empty any water that remains in the lower tray and provide good airflow around the shoots. Rotate the tray daily if the seedlings lean towards the light.

Fertilizer is not normally needed because the seeds contain enough stored energy for this short growing period.

Local Gardener Tips

  • Use a clean tray and fresh growing mix for every batch.
  • Soak the seeds in plenty of water because they expand.
  • Drain thoroughly before sowing.
  • Spread the seeds in one layer without piling them.
  • Provide extra airflow during hot or humid weather.

Harvesting

Harvest when the shoots are around 3–4 inches tall and their small green leaves have opened, usually within 10–14 days. Use clean scissors to cut them just above the growing mix.

Avoid pulling up the roots or getting coco peat among the harvested shoots. Rinse gently, drain well and use fresh. Store dry microgreens in a covered container in the refrigerator for a short period.

FAQs

Can split green lentils be used for microgreens?

No. Split lentils cannot germinate because the seed has been divided. Use whole, unbroken seeds.

Why are some seeds lifting above the growing mix?

This can happen when the roots begin pushing downwards. Covering the seeds with a lightly weighted tray during early germination helps maintain contact with the moist mix.

Why do the seeds feel soft or smell sour?

They may have been soaked too long or kept in waterlogged conditions. Drain the seeds thoroughly and avoid standing water. Discard any batch that develops a sour or unpleasant smell.

Will Green Lentil Microgreens grow again after cutting?

Regrowth is usually weak and may increase the risk of mould around the old stems. Starting a fresh tray generally gives cleaner and more even growth.
