Bird’s-foot Trefoil, also called Golden Lotus, produces clusters of golden-yellow, pea-shaped flowers above small green leaflets. Some buds and petals develop orange or reddish markings, adding warmth to the yellow display.
Its low, spreading stems soften border edges, fill spaces in rock gardens and spill gently over container rims. This perennial suits sunny, informal planting and provides nectar for visiting bees.
Why Gardeners Love It
- Golden Flowers: Small yellow blooms appear in clusters above the foliage.
- Low, Spreading Growth: Useful along borders, pathways and between rocks.
- Bee Friendly: Nectar-rich flowers attract bees to the garden.
- Modest Feeding Needs: Grows well without frequent fertiliser applications.
- Container Suitable: Creates a relaxed display in pots and troughs.
Best Conditions
- Germination: Usually 2–4 weeks; some seeds may take longer
- Germination temperature: Around 15°C
- Sunlight: At least 6 hours of direct sunlight
- Pot size: A 10–12-inch pot for one established plant
- Spacing: About 12–18 inches between plants
- Plant height: Commonly around 8–12 inches, with spreading stems
- Soil: Well-draining mix with low to moderate fertility
Sowing note: In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, start seeds from February to March, or from October to November after summer heat has eased. In Karachi and southern Punjab, November to January generally offers milder conditions. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to May as severe winter cold eases. Adjust these windows to local temperatures and protect seed trays from strong heat.
How to Sow
- Soak the seeds in room-temperature water for around 24 hours.
- Fill small pots or seed tray cells with fine, moist seed starter mix.
- Sow thinly and cover with a light sprinkling of mix, no deeper than ¼ inch.
- Water gently and keep the surface lightly moist until seedlings appear.
- Thin crowded seedlings once they are large enough to handle.
- Gradually introduce established seedlings to outdoor conditions, then transplant with their roots intact.
Seeds can also be sown directly into a prepared pot or garden bed. Keep the area free of weeds while the seedlings establish.
Plant Care
Water regularly during establishment, then allow the upper soil to begin drying between waterings. Established plants tolerate short dry periods, although containers need closer attention. After a flowering flush, lightly shorten untidy stems while leaving healthy leafy growth.
If the potting mix is very poor, add a small amount of Vermicompost before planting. Avoid frequent nitrogen-rich feeding, which can encourage leaves at the expense of flowers. Plants generally need little pest treatment. If pests appear, identify them before using Neem Oil according to its label, and avoid spraying open flowers visited by bees.
Local Gardener Tips
- Pull weeds carefully around young plants, which establish slowly.
- Protect newly transplanted seedlings from harsh afternoon heat.
- Raise pots off surfaces where rainwater collects.
- Leave room for the stems to spread around neighbouring plants.
Flowering and Display
Grow Bird’s-foot Trefoil near the front of a sunny border or among stones where its yellow clusters remain visible. In containers, position it near the edge so the stems can soften the rim.
Remove faded flower clusters if you want to limit seed formation. Avoid cutting the whole plant back to bare stems, as healthy leafy growth helps it recover.
FAQs
Is Golden Lotus the same as the lotus grown in water?
No. Bird’s-foot Trefoil belongs to the pea family and grows in ordinary soil. It does not need a pond, submerged pot or water-filled container.
Will plants grown from seed flower in their first year?
They can, particularly when started early enough to establish before the flowering season. Later sowings may spend their first season developing roots and foliage, with a fuller display the following year.
What happens to the plant during winter?
In colder areas, the foliage may die back while the roots remain alive. Keep the planting area well drained and wait for fresh growth in spring before removing a plant that appears dormant.
