Gaillardia Aristata Mix, also called Blanket Flower, produces red, yellow and orange daisy-like flowers above grey-green foliage. Many blooms have contrasting petal tips surrounding a raised central disc, bringing bright colour to sunny pots, borders and informal flower beds.
Native to North America, this perennial suits open, sunny gardens and handles dry conditions once established. Its long flowering period and visits from bees and butterflies make it a useful addition to a home garden.
Why Gardeners Love It
- Warm Colours: Red, yellow and orange flowers brighten garden displays.
- Extended Flowering: Produces successive blooms over a long season.
- Dry-Weather Tolerance: Established plants handle short dry periods.
- Pollinator Friendly: The flowers attract bees and butterflies.
- Cut Flower Use: Flowering stems can be picked for small arrangements.
Best Conditions
- Germination: Usually 14–21 days
- Germination temperature: Around 20–24°C
- Sunlight: At least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight
- Pot size: A deep 12–14-inch pot for one plant
- Spacing: About 12–18 inches between plants
- Plant height: Usually around 1–3 feet, depending on the plant
- Soil: Well-draining soil with low to moderate fertility
- First flowering: Can flower in the first growing season when started early
Sowing note: In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from September to November for plants that establish before spring, or from February to March while conditions are mild. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow after the strongest summer heat has eased, usually from October to February. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the risk of hard frost has passed. Keep seed trays protected whenever temperatures fall below the germination range.
How to Sow
- Fill a seed tray or small pots with fine, well-draining seed starter mix and moisten it evenly.
- Scatter the seeds thinly over the surface and press gently, leaving them exposed to light for germination.
- Mist carefully and place the tray in bright, indirect light, protected from rain and strong afternoon heat.
- Keep the surface lightly moist with gentle misting, allowing excess water to drain freely from the tray.
- Move seedlings into individual pots after they develop 3–4 true leaves, keeping the roots and surrounding mix together.
- Gradually introduce seedlings to direct sunshine before planting in their final pots or beds at the recommended spacing.
Plant Care
Water regularly while young plants establish. Once they are growing strongly, allow the upper soil to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly. Potted plants may need more frequent watering during hot weather. Keep the base of each plant at its original soil level when transplanting.
If the potting mix is poor, add a small amount of Vermicompost before planting. Avoid frequent heavy feeding, as Gaillardia grows well with modest fertility. Check new shoots for aphids. If needed, apply Neem Oil to affected leaves according to its label, avoiding open flowers.
Local Gardener Tips
- Don’t bury the seeds too deep, as light helps germination.
- Keep pots sheltered during prolonged monsoon rain.
- Support taller flowering stems if they lean in exposed locations.
- Keep drainage holes clear and empty saucers after watering.
Flowering and Display
Remove faded flowers by cutting their stems back to a healthy leaf or side shoot. This keeps the plant tidy and encourages further flowering. Plants started late may take longer to bloom as they first develop their roots and foliage.
Grow several plants together for a fuller display of mixed colours, or place individual pots along a sunny patio. For fresh arrangements, cut flowering stems in the morning and place them promptly in clean water.
FAQs
Why is there a white powder on the leaves?
This may be powdery mildew. It forms white or grey patches on the leaf surface and can spread where foliage is crowded. Remove badly affected leaves and improve airflow around the plant. Small patches may have little effect, but widespread infection can reduce growth and flowering.
Should I cut Blanket Flower back during winter?
In colder areas, remove dead stems and foliage before fresh spring growth begins. In mild, frost-free areas, plants may remain active longer, so trim according to their condition instead of cutting back on a fixed winter date.
