Desi Coriander produces strongly scented green leaves with the traditional dhania flavour used in chutneys, raita, curries, daal, rice and vegetable dishes. Selected plants can also be allowed to mature for aromatic coriander seeds used in cooking and spice mixes.

Coriander is native from the eastern Mediterranean to western Pakistan and has been grown across the region for centuries. Desi dhania develops well during cool weather and can be sown in several small batches for fresh leaves throughout winter.

How to Sow

1. Gently rub the round seed clusters between your palms to separate some into halves.
2. Prepare a garden bed or wide container with fine, moist soil.
3. Make shallow rows and sow the seeds around ½ inch deep and 1–2 inches apart.
4. Cover lightly, water with a gentle spray and keep the surface moist.
5. Thin crowded seedlings after true leaves appear.

Plant Care

• Watering: Keep the soil moist during germination. Once established, water when the surface begins drying and avoid waterlogging.
• Feeding: Mix Vermicompost into the soil before sowing. If older leaves turn yellow between green veins despite good drainage, apply Magnesium Nitrate at 1 teaspoon per litre of water. Wait seven days before harvesting.
• Pests: Remove leaves damaged by aphids or leaf miners. If insects continue spreading, spray Neem Oil in the evening.

Harvesting

Begin harvesting leaves when the plants are around 4–6 inches tall, usually 3–5 weeks after sowing. Keep leaf plants 2–3 inches apart, cut the larger outer stems around 1–2 inches above the soil and leave the smaller central growth in place.

For coriander seeds, select several healthy plants, space them 8–10 inches apart and stop cutting their stems. Allow them to flower and wait until the seed heads become dry and brown. Cut the stems into a paper bag and let the seeds dry completely before cleaning and storing them.
