Desi Beetroot is a cool-season vegetable with broad green leaves, reddish stems and rounded, deep-red roots. The roots have a mild, sweet flavour and can be eaten raw, boiled, roasted, pickled or blended into juice. Young leaves can also be cooked like spinach.

Beetroot is a form of Beta vulgaris, a plant native from western Europe through the Mediterranean region to India, including Pakistan. It has been grown for its edible roots for centuries. During cool weather, its leaves grow steadily while the root thickens at soil level.

In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from September to February, although growth may slow during the coldest weeks. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from October to February, once the strongest summer heat has eased. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the risk of hard frost has passed, or from August to September for autumn growth.

How to Sow

1. Loosen the soil in the final pot or garden bed and remove stones and hard lumps.
2. Make shallow rows or planting holes around ½–1 inch deep.
3. Place the seeds about 2 inches apart and cover them with fine soil.
4. Water gently and keep the soil surface moist until seedlings appear.
5. When the seedlings are around 1 inch tall, keep the strongest plants and leave 3–4 inches between them.

Plant Care

• Watering: Water when the soil surface begins drying. Keep the soil lightly moist without leaving it soaked. Long dry periods followed by heavy watering can cause the roots to split.
• Feeding: Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the soil before sowing. If the plants remain small and pale after 4–6 weeks despite receiving enough sunlight and water, apply NPK 20-20-20 Fertilizer once at 1 teaspoon per litre of water. Leave at least seven days between feeding and harvesting.
• Pests: Remove badly affected leaves with pale winding lines or blotchy areas caused by leaf miners. If aphids or flea beetles continue damaging new leaves, spray Neem Oil in the evening according to the product directions, including underneath the affected leaves.

Harvesting

Begin checking the roots around 50 days after sowing. The exact time depends on the weather and the size you prefer. Lift the roots when they are around 1½–3 inches across. Smaller roots are usually more tender, while roots left too long may become hard or woody.

Loosen firm soil with a hand fork before lifting the plants. You can also pick a few young outer leaves, but leave at least four or five healthy leaves on each plant so the root can keep growing.

Why are several seedlings growing in one place?

What looks like one beetroot seed is usually a small seed cluster that can produce more than one seedling. This is normal. Keep the strongest seedling and remove the others while they are small.

Why can I see the top of the root above the soil?

The top may become visible as the root grows. This is normal. Do not push it down or cover it deeply. Leave it in place until the root reaches the size you want.

Why is my beetroot growing a flower stalk?

A spell of very cold weather followed by warmth, or hot and dry conditions, can make beetroot flower early. The root will usually stop growing well and may become tough. Remove the plant and sow again during steadier cool weather.
