Grow safed petha (ash gourd) in your own space — whether it's a rooftop bed, a large grow bag, or a kitchen side kiyari. These desi, open-pollinated seeds produce pale green gourds with soft white flesh, commonly used in cooking and sweets. Vines grow fast in hot weather and produce better yield when supported properly.

Best for gardeners with sunny rooftops or open beds where vines can spread or climb freely.

Why Gardeners Prefer It

  • Desi variety suitable for home seed saving
  • Grows large round gourds with mild white flesh
  • Thrives in full sun and consistent moisture
  • Germinates in 6–10 days; harvests in 90–110 days

How to Grow Ash Gourd

When to Sow

  • Spring: February to April
  • Monsoon: July to August
Avoid winter — ash gourd is sensitive to cold and does not perform in low temperatures.

Where to Grow

  • Rooftop gardeners can use large grow bags or ground beds with sun exposure
  • Needs at least 5–6 feet of vine spread — train it upward using a net or trellis

Sowing Instructions

  • Use a soil mix of 2 parts soil + 1 part vermicompost
  • Sow seeds 1–1.5 cm deep, directly in final container or bed
  • Keep soil moist — not wet — during sprouting
  • Vines will appear within 7–10 days; support them early to avoid damage

Fertilizer & Care

  • Before Sowing: Mix in vermicompost for better soil texture and early root strength
  • Every 2 Weeks (Growth Stage): Apply NPK 20-20-20 lightly to support leaf and vine growth
  • Once Flowers Appear: Switch to NPK 5-15-45 to boost flowering and fruit size
  • For Pests: Spray Neem Oil every 7–10 days, especially during humid weather to prevent aphids or mildew

Local Growing Tips

  • Needs full sun (6–8 hrs/day) — shaded vines produce poorly
  • Place a clean tile or surface under ripening fruits to reduce rot on contact with soil
  • Use plant support netting to manage vines in tight rooftop areas
  • Harvest fruits once the skin turns pale and surface starts to harden slightly

FAQs

Can I grow ash gourd in a container?
Yes. Use a 16–20 inch grow bag with support for vines. Avoid using smaller containers — fruit size and health will suffer.

How many fruits does one plant give?
On average, 2–4 full-size gourds per plant, depending on space, sun, and feeding.

Do I need to hand-pollinate?
It helps. Like most gourds, ash gourd has separate male and female flowers. Use a soft brush to move pollen between flowers.

Can I use young fruits for cooking?
Yes. Young ash gourds are ideal for curries. For petha, slightly mature but soft-fleshed fruits are preferred.

Can I grow it in winter?
No. Ash gourd needs warm temperatures to sprout and grow. Avoid sowing in cold months.

Other Names: Ash Gourd, Winter Melon, Wax Gourd, Petha (پیٹھا), Safed Kaddu (سفید کدو).
