Cosmos Sea Shells Mix produces tall, airy plants with unusual flowers in white, pink, rose and carmine. The petals curl into narrow tubes around a yellow centre, creating their distinctive fluted, shell-like shape. Fine, feathery leaves make the plants attractive in sunny pots, borders and grouped flower planting.

Sea Shells belongs to Garden Cosmos, a species native to Mexico. It grows quickly during mild, sunny weather, attracts bees and butterflies, and produces long stems suitable for small indoor arrangements.

In Lahore and Faisalabad, sow from late September to November, or again from February to March. In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from September to October, or again from late February to March after severe cold has eased. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from October to December after the strongest summer heat has passed. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the risk of hard frost has passed.

How to Sow

Cosmos is easy to sow directly in its final pot or flower bed. The seeds need only a light covering of soil.

1. Fill the final pot or prepare the bed with fine, moist soil.
2. Sow the seeds thinly and evenly over the prepared surface.
3. Cover them with around ⅛ inch of fine soil.
4. Water the surface gently using a fine spray.
5. Keep the soil lightly moist until the seedlings appear.
6. At 2–3 true leaves, leave 12–18 inches between plants.

Plant Care

Water regularly while the seedlings are becoming established. Once the plants are stronger, water when the upper soil begins to dry. Avoid frequent watering because constantly wet soil can produce weak growth and root problems.

Pinch the main growing tip when the plant is around 8–10 inches tall to encourage more branches. Tall plants may need a slim stake, especially in windy rooftop gardens.

Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into poor potting mix before sowing. Repeated feeding is unnecessary because overly rich soil can produce tall, leafy stems with fewer flowers.

If aphids appear, spray Neem Oil on the affected foliage while avoiding open flowers. Remove slugs and snails by hand if they damage young seedlings.

• Place tall Cosmos behind shorter flowers so it does not block their sunlight.
• Use a heavy pot on exposed rooftops to prevent the plant from toppling.
• Sow another small batch after 3–4 weeks for later flowers.

Flowering

Sea Shells Cosmos usually begins flowering around 10–13 weeks after sowing. Blooming remains strongest during sunny, mild weather.

Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage new buds. For a vase, cut stems when the first petals have started opening and place them in clean water.
