Cornflower Mix produces full, fringed flowers in shades of blue, purple, pink, red and white. The rounded blooms rise on slender stems above narrow grey-green leaves, bringing a soft, colourful look to sunny pots, borders and flower beds. Their long stems can also be cut for small home bouquets.

Native to the central and eastern Mediterranean region, Cornflower grows best during cool, mild weather. In Pakistan, it develops well through winter and flowers from late winter into spring before strong heat shortens the display.

Sowing note: In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from late September to November, or again from late January to February. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the risk of hard frost has passed.

How to Sow

Cornflower is easiest to sow directly in its final pot or flower bed.

1. Fill the final pot or prepare the bed with fine, moist potting mix.
2. Make shallow rows around ¼ inch deep.
3. Sow the seeds thinly along the prepared rows.
4. Cover them lightly and water using a fine spray.
5. Keep the surface lightly moist until the seedlings appear.
6. Thin after 2–3 true leaves develop, leaving 8–12 inches between plants.

Plant Care

Water when the upper layer of the mix begins to dry. Keep young plants evenly moist while they become established, but never leave the roots in soggy soil. Established plants can handle short dry periods, although regular moisture helps while buds are developing.

Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the soil before sowing. Cornflower needs only light feeding. Excessive fertilizer can produce soft, leafy stems that lean easily.

Cornflower usually has few pest problems. If aphids gather around the tender tips and buds, spray Neem Oil on the affected stems and leaves in the evening, avoiding open flowers.
