Convolvulus Minor Tricolour brings blue, pink, purple and white funnel-shaped flowers to sunny pots and garden borders. Contrasting white markings around yellow centres give the blooms their distinctive patterned appearance.
Also called Dwarf Morning Glory, this Mediterranean plant develops a compact, branching shape with fresh green leaves. Grow several plants together for a colourful border, or let their spreading stems soften the edges of containers and window boxes.
Why Gardeners Love It
- Patterned Flowers: Contrasting centres make each bloom stand out against the green leaves.
- Mixed Colours: Blue, pink, purple and white shades create a varied display.
- Compact Growth: Fits comfortably into pots, window boxes and smaller garden spaces.
- Continued Flowering: Produces fresh buds over an extended flowering period.
- Bee Friendly: The open flowers attract bees to sunny garden areas.
Best Conditions
- Germination: Usually 7–21 days
- Germination temperature: Around 18–24°C
- Sunlight: At least 6 hours
- Pot size: An 8–10-inch pot for one plant
- Spacing: About 12 inches between plants
- Plant height: Usually around 8–12 inches
- Soil: Light, moderately fertile and well-draining mix
- First flowers: Usually around 11–16 weeks from sowing
Sowing note: In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from February to April, protecting early seedlings from late frost. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from February to March, or again from September to October after the strongest summer heat has eased. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from April to May after the risk of frost has passed.
How to Sow
- Soak the seeds in clean, lukewarm water for 8–12 hours, then drain them and sow promptly into prepared containers.
- Fill pots with fine, well-draining mix, or prepare a level garden bed by removing weeds, stones and hard clumps.
- Sow seeds about ¼ inch deep, cover lightly with the mix and leave enough room to thin seedlings later.
- Water gently and keep the sowing area warm and bright, sheltering containers from heavy rain and strong afternoon heat.
- Check moisture daily and water lightly whenever the surface begins drying, keeping the mix damp without leaving it waterlogged.
- Thin seedlings after 2–3 true leaves appear, leaving one strong plant per pot or about 12 inches between garden plants.
Plant Care
Water regularly while the plants establish. Afterwards, allow the upper layer of the mix to begin drying between waterings. Established plants tolerate short dry periods, but containers may need more frequent watering during hot weather. Keep drainage holes clear and empty any water collecting in saucers.
Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the soil before sowing. Check young shoots and leaf undersides for aphids and spider mites. If needed, apply Neem Oil according to its label, avoiding open flowers and strong sunlight.
Local Gardener Tips
- Provide light afternoon shade during extreme summer heat.
- Keep containers sheltered from prolonged monsoon rain.
- Water the soil gently so splashing does not damage open flowers.
- Position the plants along sunny edges where taller plants will not shade them.
Flowering and Display
Flowering begins once the plants have developed enough leafy growth. Remove faded blooms regularly to encourage continued flowering, taking care to leave nearby unopened buds intact.
Use the mix along the front of flower beds, beside pathways or in grouped balcony pots. Its spreading habit also works well around the edges of larger containers, where the patterned flowers remain easy to see.
FAQs
Does Convolvulus Minor Tricolour need a trellis?
No. Its stems spread without twining around supports. Climbing Morning Glory varieties used for fences and arches belong to Ipomoea; Convolvulus Minor Tricolour is grown as a low, bushy plant.
Why do the flowers close in cloudy weather or towards evening?
This is normal. The flowers open in bright daylight and may close when conditions become dull or evening approaches. Each bloom lasts one day, while developing buds provide the next flowers.
Will the same plant flower again next year?
It is usually grown as an annual. It may survive longer in warm, frost-free conditions, but sowing fresh seeds each season gives a more dependable display. Frost can damage or kill the plant.
