Cineraria Mix forms compact plants covered with clusters of bright, daisy-like flowers. A packet may produce shades of blue, purple, violet, pink, red and white, including blooms with contrasting rings or centres. The broad green leaves create a full base beneath the colourful flower display.
Native to the Canary Islands, Florist’s Cineraria prefers cool temperatures, gentle sunlight and protection from drying wind. In Pakistan, it is grown mainly as a winter and early-spring flower for shaded balconies, sheltered patios and bright indoor spaces.
Why Grow It
- Bright Colours: One packet produces flowers in several rich and contrasting shades.
- Dense Display: Numerous blooms can cover most of the compact plant.
- Shade Friendly: Suitable for places receiving gentle morning sun or filtered light.
- Pot Friendly: Grows well in containers on balconies, patios and bright windowsills.
Best Conditions
- Germination: Usually 10–21 days
- Temperature: Around 18–22°C for germination
- Sunlight: About 2–4 hours of gentle morning sun
- Pot size: An 8–12-inch pot
- Spacing: About 10–12 inches between plants
- Plant height: Usually around 10–18 inches
- Soil: Moist, fertile and well-draining mix
In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from August to October so plants can develop before the main winter flowering period. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from September to November after the strongest summer heat has eased. In colder northern and hilly areas, start seeds in protected trays from February to March.
How to Sow
Start Cineraria in a seedling tray or small pots. Its tiny seeds need light and should remain on the surface.
- Fill the tray or pots with fine, moist seed starter mix.
- Scatter the seeds thinly and evenly over the surface.
- Press them gently against the mix without covering them.
- Mist carefully and keep the tray in bright, indirect light.
- Transplant after 3–4 true leaves develop, leaving 10–12 inches between plants.
Plant Care
Keep the soil evenly moist because Cineraria wilts quickly when allowed to become completely dry. Water when the surface begins to lose moisture, but never leave the roots standing in soggy soil. Water near the base to keep the broad leaves and dense growth dry.
Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the final soil before transplanting. Once buds appear, apply Flower Fertilizer as directed. Avoid heavy feeding, which can encourage excess leaf growth.
If aphids, whiteflies or leaf miners appear, remove badly damaged leaves and spray Neem Oil on the remaining affected foliage during the evening. Avoid spraying open flowers.
Local Gardener Tips
- Protect surface-sown seeds from forceful watering and heavy rain.
- Keep plants away from strong afternoon sunlight.
- Shelter pots from hot, dry wind and rooftop heat.
- Maintain airflow without exposing plants to cold drafts.
Flowering
Plants usually begin flowering around 4–5 months after sowing. Rounded clusters gradually open above the foliage, eventually forming a dense covering of colourful blooms.
Remove faded flower clusters by cutting their stems near the base. Keep flowering plants in a cool, bright location because warm conditions can shorten the display.
FAQs
Is flowering Cineraria the same as Silverdust?
No. Florist’s Cineraria is grown for colourful flowers and broad green leaves. Silverdust is a different plant grown mainly for its deeply cut, silver-grey foliage.
Why does Cineraria wilt during the afternoon?
Cineraria is sensitive to heat and strong sunlight. Move the pot to a cooler place with filtered light and check the soil moisture. Avoid adding more water if the soil is already wet.
What causes grey mould on the leaves and flowers?
Grey mould can develop when dense growth remains damp in cool, humid conditions. Remove affected parts, improve airflow and avoid wetting the plant late in the day.
