Cauliflower Microgreens produce tender green leaves on crisp, pale to violet stems. They have a mild cabbage-like flavour and can be added to sandwiches, wraps, salads, eggs, raita, rice, noodles, dal and sabzi. Add them after cooking to keep their fresh texture.
Cauliflower belongs to the cabbage family, which developed from wild cabbage around the Mediterranean region. As microgreens, the young plants are harvested soon after their first seed leaves open, long before a cauliflower head develops.
Why Grow It
- Quick Harvest: Usually ready within 8–10 days.
- Mild Flavour: Easy to use with both fresh and cooked foods.
- Small Space: Grows in a shallow tray on a windowsill, shelf or kitchen counter.
- Year-Round Growing: Can be grown indoors during any season.
- Beginner Friendly: The small seeds germinate quickly and do not require soaking.
Best Conditions
- Germination: Usually 1–2 days
- Harvest: Around 8–10 days
- Temperature: Around 18–25°C
- Light: Bright, indirect light after germination
- Tray: A shallow tray with drainage holes
- Seed amount: Around 15 grams per 10 × 20-inch tray
- Growing mix: Fine coco peat or seed starter mix
Cauliflower Microgreens can be grown throughout the year in Pakistan. Keep the tray in a bright, sheltered place with good airflow. During hot or humid weather, use the coolest available indoor area and protect the young leaves from direct afternoon sunlight.
How to Grow
- Clean two shallow trays. Fill the tray with drainage holes with 1–1½ inches of moist coco peat or fine seed starter mix.
- Spread the dry seeds evenly over the surface. Use around 15 grams for a 10 × 20-inch tray and press them gently against the mix.
- Mist the seeds, cover them with the second tray and place a light weight on top for 2–3 days.
- Remove the cover when the seedlings begin lifting it, then move the tray into bright, indirect light.
- Add water to the lower tray whenever the growing mix begins drying. Keep it moist without leaving it soaked.
Plant Care
After removing the cover, rotate the tray each day so the stems receive even light. Direct, hot sunlight can dry the growing mix quickly and damage the tender leaves.
Water from below whenever possible. Pour a small amount of clean water into the solid lower tray and allow the growing mix to absorb it. Remove any water that remains after the mix is moist.
Extra fertilizer is usually unnecessary because Cauliflower Microgreens are harvested within a few days. Keep the tray clean and well ventilated to reduce mold during humid weather.
Local Gardener Tips
- Spread the seeds evenly and avoid thick piles.
- Use clean trays, water and scissors.
- Keep the tray away from strong afternoon sunlight.
- Provide gentle airflow during humid or monsoon weather.
- Sow a new small tray every few days for a regular supply.
Harvesting
Harvest around 8–10 days after sowing, when the seed leaves are fully open and the stems are approximately 2–3 inches tall.
Use clean scissors to cut the stems just above the growing mix. Avoid pulling up the roots or allowing coco peat to mix with the harvested greens. Rinse gently with clean water before eating and drain them well.
FAQs
Are microgreens the same as sprouts?
No. Sprouts are germinated without a growing mix and are eaten with their roots. Microgreens grow in a tray under light and are cut above the growing mix.
Is the white fuzz around the roots mold?
Fine white hairs growing directly from the roots are usually root hairs and often disappear after misting. Mold spreads between seeds or stems like a web and may have an unpleasant smell.
Will Cauliflower Microgreens grow again after cutting?
They normally provide one harvest. After cutting, remove the roots and used growing mix, clean the tray and sow a fresh batch.
