Bright Eyes Linum produces satiny white flowers with deep burgundy centres, carried above narrow grey-green leaves. The rounded petals and dark central eye create a striking contrast in sunny pots, mixed borders and cottage gardens.
Its slender, branching stems give the display a light, airy appearance. This Buzzy selection grows around 16–20 inches tall and looks especially attractive in small groups, where the flowers rise above the fine foliage.
Why Gardeners Love It
- Contrasting Flowers: White petals surround a rich burgundy eye.
- Airy Growth: Fine leaves and slender stems add lightness to mixed planting.
- Pot Friendly: Suitable for sunny containers and small flower beds.
- Bee Friendly: The open flowers attract visiting pollinators.
- Simple Sowing: Seeds can be sown directly in their final position.
Best Conditions
- Germination: Usually 10–21 days
- Germination temperature: Around 20°C
- Sunlight: At least 6 hours
- Pot size: A 10–12-inch pot
- Spacing: About 8–12 inches between plants
- Plant height: Around 16–20 inches
- Soil: Light, moderately fertile and well-draining mix
- First flowers: Usually around 8–12 weeks from sowing
Sowing note: In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from September to November after the strongest summer heat has eased. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from October to November. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the risk of hard frost has passed.
How to Sow
- Fill the final pot with fine potting mix or rake the garden soil level.
- Sow the seeds thinly in shallow rows or small groups.
- Cover with around ⅛ inch of fine soil and firm gently.
- Water with a fine spray and keep the seeded soil lightly moist.
- Once true leaves develop, snip off crowded seedlings without disturbing the remaining roots.
Plant Care
Water gently while seedlings establish. Afterwards, water thoroughly when the upper soil begins drying and allow excess water to drain. Container-grown plants need closer checking during dry weather, especially while buds are developing.
If the soil is very poor, mix in a small amount of Vermicompost before sowing. Routine feeding is usually unnecessary because overly rich soil can reduce flowering. If aphids gather on tender shoots, treat affected growth with Neem Oil at its labelled dilution, avoiding open flowers.
Local Gardener Tips
- Sow a second small patch 2–3 weeks later to extend the overall display.
- Shelter rooftop pots from strong winds that may bend the slender stems.
- Wait until prolonged monsoon rain has eased before starting an autumn sowing.
Flowering and Display
Grow Bright Eyes in groups alongside blue cornflowers, Nigella or red flowering flax. Its white petals brighten mixed planting, while the burgundy centres connect well with nearby red and purple flowers.
Remove faded flower heads gently to encourage further blooming. Keep the plants within reach of a pathway or seating area so the contrasting centres can be appreciated closely.
FAQs
Why do the flowers lose their petals so quickly?
Each flower is naturally short-lived, often lasting just one day. Petals falling from an otherwise healthy plant are normal and do not necessarily indicate a watering or pest problem.
Is Bright Eyes Linum the same as Alsi?
Bright Eyes is an ornamental flowering flax, Linum grandiflorum. The Alsi (السی) grown for linseed and fibre is Linum usitatissimum, a different species.
Common names: Bright Eyes Linum, Bright Eyes Flax, White Flowering Flax, Ornamental Flax, Linum grandiflorum ‘Bright Eyes’
