Balsam Bush Double Mix, locally called Gul Mehndi (گل مہندی), produces rose-like double blooms in pink, red, purple and white. Softly ruffled, layered petals give the flowers a full, rounded appearance among narrow green leaves.
The upright, bushy plants carry flowers along their leafy stems, making them attractive for summer pots, balconies and garden borders. Grow several together for a mixed display, or position individual pots where the rose-like blooms can be appreciated from the side.
Why Gardeners Love It
- Rose-Like Blooms: Softly layered petals create full, rounded flowers.
- Mixed Colours: Pink, red, purple and white brighten summer planting.
- Bushy Growth: Leafy plants suit pots, border edges and grouped displays.
- Partial Shade Suitable: Grows well with morning sunlight and light afternoon shade.
- Warm-Weather Flowering: Develops quickly during warm weather with suitable moisture and drainage.
- Germination Tested: Balsam seeds with a high germination rate.
Best Conditions
- Germination: Usually 7–15 days
- Germination temperature: Around 18–24°C
- Seed tray light: Bright, indirect light
- Sunlight: Around 4–6 hours of morning sunlight, with afternoon shade during hot weather
- Pot size: A 10–12-inch pot for one plant
- Spacing: About 12–18 inches between plants
- Soil: Moist, fertile and well-draining mix
- First flowers: Usually around 9–12 weeks from sowing
Sowing note: In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from March to April after cold weather has eased. Another sowing can be started from June to July, with trays sheltered from heavy monsoon rain. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from February to March, or again from August to September while warm conditions continue. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from April to May after the risk of frost has passed.
How to Sow
- Fill a clean seed tray or small pots with fine, moist seed starter mix.
- Place one seed in each cell, or scatter the seeds thinly over the surface.
- Press the seeds gently into the mix without burying them deeply, then mist lightly.
- Cover with a clear lid or loose plastic, opening daily and keeping the surface lightly moist.
- Remove the cover once seedlings appear, and carefully thin any crowded groups.
- Gradually introduce seedlings to outdoor conditions, then transplant when they have 3–4 true leaves.
Seeds can also be sown directly into their final pots or a prepared garden bed once conditions are warm and frost-free.
Plant Care
Keep the soil evenly moist, especially while buds and flowers are developing. Water at soil level and empty any water collecting beneath pots. Pinch the growing tip once when plants are around 4–6 inches tall if more branching is wanted. Handle the soft stems carefully when moving pots or removing damaged growth.
Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the final potting mix. Avoid excessive nitrogen feeding, which favours leaves over flowers. Check tender shoots and leaf undersides for aphids, whiteflies and other sucking insects. If using Neem Oil, follow its label, test a small area first and keep the spray off the blooms.
Local Gardener Tips
- Protect seed trays from strong watering and heavy monsoon rain.
- Keep containers away from walls that reflect intense afternoon heat.
- Leave space between mature plants so air can move through the foliage.
- Shelter the fleshy stems from strong wind on rooftops and balconies.
Flowering Display
Buds form beside the leaves and open into rose-like blooms along the stems. Arrange pots at different levels or plant groups beside a pathway so the flowers remain visible among the foliage.
Remove faded blooms gently before they become wet and damaged. Keep healthy leaves in place and avoid pulling on the stems while tidying the plants.
FAQs
Will the packet produce equal numbers of each colour?
Colour proportions can vary between packets. Each plant generally flowers in one colour, so equal numbers of pink, red, purple and white plants cannot be guaranteed.
Why do my seedlings collapse after germination?
If the stems become thin, soft or dark at soil level, damping off may be responsible. Affected seedlings cannot recover. Remove them, and if the problem spreads, restart with fresh seed starter mix in a thoroughly cleaned tray.
Can I collect seeds from these plants?
Yes. Leave a few flowers to develop seed pods. The ripe pods burst when touched, so hold a small paper bag around them during collection. Dry the collected seeds thoroughly before storing them in a labelled envelope in a cool, dry place.
