Tagetes Gold F1 Hybrid is an African Marigold with large, densely layered flowers in a rich golden-yellow colour. Its upright plants and rounded flower heads create a bright display in sunny pots, borders and flower beds. The flowers are also suitable for garlands, decorations and vases.

African Marigold originated in Mexico and Central America. This F1 hybrid is selected for vigorous, uniform growth and consistent flowering. In Pakistan, it performs well from autumn through spring and may also grow during the rainy season when protected from waterlogged soil and prolonged heavy rain.

Why Grow It

  • Golden Flowers: Large, fully double blooms have a rich golden-yellow colour.
  • Uniform Growth: F1 hybrid plants develop with a more consistent height and flowering habit.
  • Long Display: Regular removal of faded flowers supports continued blooming.
  • Many Uses: Suitable for pots, flower beds, borders, garlands and vase arrangements.

Best Conditions

  • Germination: Usually 4–10 days
  • Temperature: Around 20–27°C for germination
  • Sunlight: At least 6 hours
  • Pot size: A 12–14-inch pot or larger
  • Spacing: About 12–18 inches between plants
  • Plant height: Usually around 24–36 inches
  • Soil: Moderately fertile, loose and well-draining mix

In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from September to November, or again from February to March. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from October to December, or during February while the weather remains mild. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the risk of hard frost has passed.

How to Sow

Start Tagetes Gold in a seedling tray or small pots before moving the young plants to their final location.

  1. Fill the tray or pots with fine, moist seed starter mix.
  2. Make shallow holes around ¼ inch deep.
  3. Place one seed in each hole and cover it lightly.
  4. Water gently without washing the seeds out of place.
  5. Keep the mix lightly moist in a warm, bright location.
  6. Transplant after 3–4 true leaves appear, leaving 12–18 inches between plants.

Plant Care

Water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry. Keep young plants evenly moist while they establish, but avoid leaving the roots in soggy soil. Water near the base early in the day, especially during humid or foggy weather.

Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the final soil before transplanting. Once buds begin forming, apply Flower Fertilizer as directed to support healthy flowering. Avoid excessive nitrogen because it can produce abundant leaves with fewer flowers.

If aphids, whiteflies or spider mites appear, spray Neem Oil on the affected leaves and stems. Apply it during the evening and avoid spraying open flowers.

Local Gardener Tips

  • Protect young seedlings from forceful watering and heavy rain.
  • Pinch the growing tip once when plants are 6–8 inches tall for more branches.
  • Give tall plants a slim stake in exposed rooftop pots.
  • Leave enough space for airflow during humid and foggy weather.

Flowering

Plants usually begin flowering around 10–12 weeks after sowing. Cut faded flower heads just above a healthy pair of leaves to encourage new branches and buds.

For decorations or vases, cut flowers when they are fully open but still firm at the centre. Place the stems in clean water soon after cutting and remove any leaves that would remain below the waterline.

FAQs

Can I save seeds from this F1 hybrid?

Seeds may form, but plants grown from them may differ in height, flower size, colour and overall performance. New F1 seeds are needed if you want growth closer to the original variety.

Why are the flower heads turning brown before opening?

Moisture trapped inside the dense buds can cause them to rot during prolonged rain or humid weather. Remove affected buds, improve airflow and keep the flowers dry when watering.
