Petunia Red Star produces large, trumpet-shaped flowers with vivid red petals divided by a clean white star. The sharp two-colour pattern creates a bright focal point in winter pots, hanging baskets, window boxes and front borders. Its compact, branching growth keeps the display neat.
This F1 hybrid belongs to the large-flowered Grandiflora group. Garden petunias were developed from species native to South America. In Pakistan, Red Star grows best during cool to mild weather and flowers from winter into spring.
Why Grow It
- Red-and-White Pattern: Each flower has a vivid red base with a clear white star.
- Large Blooms: Grandiflora flowers create a bold and noticeable display.
- Compact Shape: Branching growth forms neat mounds in pots and borders.
- Extended Colour: New buds continue opening while the weather remains mild.
Best Conditions
- Germination: Usually 7–10 days
- Temperature: Around 22–25°C for germination and 15–24°C afterward
- Sunlight: At least 6 hours
- Pot size: An 8–12-inch-wide pot
- Spacing: About 10–12 inches between plants
- Plant height: Usually around 10–15 inches
- Soil: Light, fertile and well-draining mix
In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from September to November, or again from late January to February for a shorter spring display. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from October to January after the strongest summer heat has eased. In colder northern and hilly areas, start seeds in protected trays from February to March, then transplant after the risk of hard frost has passed.
How to Sow
Start Petunia Red Star in a seedling tray or small pots. The tiny seeds need light to germinate and should remain on the surface.
- Fill the tray or pots with fine, moist seed starter mix.
- Scatter the tiny seeds thinly and evenly over the surface.
- Press them gently against the mix without covering them.
- Water the surface gently using a fine spray.
- Cover the tray and keep it warm in bright, indirect light.
- Remove the cover after sprouting and transplant at three true leaves, leaving 10–12 inches between plants.
Plant Care
Water when the upper layer of the mix begins to dry. Avoid long dry periods while buds and flowers are developing, but always allow excess water to drain. Water near the soil early in the day rather than repeatedly wetting the large flowers.
Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the final potting mix before transplanting. Once buds begin forming, apply Flower Fertilizer according to the label. Excessive nitrogen can produce more leaves with fewer flowers.
If aphids, whiteflies or thrips appear around the tender growth, spray Neem Oil on the affected stems and leaves, avoiding open flowers.
Local Gardener Tips
- Rotate pots weekly so every side receives sufficient sunlight.
- Provide full winter sun, then afternoon shade as spring becomes warmer.
- Shelter the large flowers from prolonged rain and strong rooftop winds.
- Pinch young plants once at 5–6 inches if they develop few side branches.
Flowering
Plants usually begin flowering around 10–14 weeks after sowing. Several buds can open together once the compact plants have developed enough branches.
Remove each faded flower along with the small developing seedpod behind it. If the stems later become long and untidy, trim them lightly to encourage fresh growth and more buds.
FAQs
Why are my Petunia Red Star seedlings tall and thin?
They are probably receiving insufficient light after germination. Remove the tray cover promptly and move the seedlings to a brighter, cooler location without exposing them suddenly to harsh midday sun.
