Spearmint is a spreading perennial herb with pointed, bright green leaves and a sweet, fresh mint flavour. Use the leaves in chutney, raita, lemonade, tea, salads, sauces, drinks, rice dishes and marinades.

It is native from Europe eastward to China, with its natural range including Pakistan and the western Himalayas. It grows through underground stems and can gradually fill a pot or spread through a garden bed.

Why Grow It

  • Mild Flavour: Sweet, fresh mint taste without excessive sharpness.
  • Everyday Uses: Suitable for chutney, raita, drinks, tea and cooked meals.
  • Repeated Picking: Regular trimming provides fresh leaves for many months.
  • Perennial Growth: Established plants can return for several years.
  • Pot Friendly: Easy to keep near the kitchen in a separate container.

Best Conditions

  • Germination: Usually 7–14 days
  • Temperature: Around 18–24°C
  • Sunlight: Around 4–6 hours
  • Pot size: A wide 12–14-inch pot
  • Spacing: About 18 inches between plants
  • Plant height: Usually around 12–24 inches
  • Soil: Moist, fertile and well-draining mix

In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from February to April or from September to November. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from October to February during milder weather. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after severe frost has passed.

How to Sow

  1. Fill a seed tray or small pot with fine, moist seed starter mix.
  2. Scatter the tiny seeds thinly over the surface.
  3. Press gently and cover with a very thin layer of the mix.
  4. Mist the surface, cover with clear plastic and keep in bright, indirect light.
  5. Remove the cover after seedlings appear and transplant when they have 3–4 true leaves.

Plant Care

Keep the soil evenly moist without leaving it waterlogged. Container-grown Spearmint may need more frequent watering during hot weather because its leafy growth uses water quickly.

Pinch the growing tips regularly to encourage more branches. Remove flower spikes early if you want the plant to continue producing plenty of tender leaves.

Mix a little mature compost into the potting mix before transplanting. If growth becomes weak after repeated harvesting, add another small amount around the edge of the pot.

Check the new growth for aphids, whiteflies and spider mites. Remove badly damaged leaves and spray Neem Oil on affected leaves, including their undersides.

Local Gardener Tips

  • Grow Spearmint in a separate pot to control its spreading roots.
  • Provide afternoon shade during extreme summer heat.
  • Do not allow the potting mix to dry completely.
  • Trim regularly before the stems become long and untidy.
  • Divide or repot the plant when roots fill the container.

Harvesting

Begin light harvesting when the plant is around 6–8 inches tall and has several healthy stems. Cut the leafy tips just above a pair of leaves so the remaining stems can develop new branches.

Take no more than one-third of the plant at one time. Use the leaves fresh for their strongest flavour. Extra leaves can be dried in a shaded, airy place or chopped and frozen.

FAQs

Is Spearmint the same as Peppermint?

No. Spearmint has a sweeter, milder taste. Peppermint has a stronger flavour and a more noticeable cooling effect.

Will Spearmint return after winter?

Yes. Spearmint is a perennial. Frost may damage the leaves and stems, but established roots can survive and produce new growth when the weather becomes warmer.

Why are orange or brown spots appearing on the leaves?

These may be signs of mint rust or leaf spot. Remove badly affected leaves, improve airflow and avoid leaving the foliage wet overnight.

Why does my Spearmint have a weak smell?

Weak sunlight, excessive feeding or old untrimmed stems can reduce the fragrance. Move the plant to a brighter location and trim it regularly to encourage fresh leaves.
