Five Spot produces small white flowers with one violet-purple mark near the tip of each petal. Together, the five markings form a neat ring around the centre, giving each bloom its distinctive pattern. Its low, gently spreading growth looks attractive along pot rims, beside pathways and at the front of winter flower beds.
Native to the western United States, Five Spot is a cool-season annual that grows best in mild weather. In Pakistan, it develops through winter and flowers from late winter into spring. The open blooms also attract solitary bees and other beneficial insects.
Why Grow It
- Spotted Blooms: Each white flower carries five distinctive violet-purple marks.
- Low Growing: Spreads gently without hiding nearby seasonal flowers.
- Compact Display: Several plants create a soft covering in small spaces.
- Pollinator Friendly: The open flowers attract bees and other visiting insects.
Best Conditions
- Germination: Usually 7–21 days
- Temperature: Around 13–21°C
- Sunlight: At least 4–6 hours
- Pot size: 8–12-inch-wide pot or larger
- Spacing: About 4–6 inches between plants
- Plant height: Usually around 6–10 inches
- Spread: Approximately 6–12 inches
- Soil: Moist, fertile and well-draining mix
Sowing note: In Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from September to November, or again from late January to February for a shorter spring display. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from October to January after the strongest summer heat has eased. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the risk of hard frost has passed.
How to Sow
Five Spot is easiest to sow directly in its final pot or flower bed.
- Prepare the final container or flower bed with fine, moist potting mix.
- Make shallow rows around ⅛ inch deep across the prepared surface.
- Sow the seeds thinly along the rows, leaving a little space between them.
- Cover them with a very thin layer of mix and water using a fine spray.
- Keep the upper layer lightly moist in a bright, cool location.
- Thin after 2–3 true leaves appear, leaving 4–6 inches between plants.
Plant Care
Water when the surface of the mix begins to dry. Five Spot prefers fairly even moisture, especially while the plants are young and forming buds. Keep the soil moist but never leave it soggy.
Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the soil before sowing. Further feeding is usually unnecessary. Too much fertilizer can produce soft, leafy growth with fewer flowers.
Five Spot generally has few pest problems. If aphids gather around the tender growth, spray Neem Oil on the affected leaves and stems in the evening, avoiding open flowers.
Local Gardener Tips
- Protect newly sown pots from strong watering and heavy rain.
- Give plants full winter sun, then light afternoon shade as spring becomes warmer.
- Keep containers away from heat-reflecting walls and hot rooftop surfaces.
- Sow another small group after 2–3 weeks for a longer flowering display.
Flowering
Plants usually begin flowering around 7–10 weeks after sowing. New buds continue opening while the weather remains cool and the soil stays lightly moist.
Remove faded flowers regularly to keep the low growth tidy. If the first display becomes untidy, trim the spent stems lightly above healthy leaves. Fresh buds may appear while conditions remain mild.
FAQs
Is Five Spot the same as Baby Blue Eyes?
No. They belong to the same plant group but are different species. Five Spot has white petals with purple markings, while Baby Blue Eyes usually produces clear blue flowers.
Can Five Spot grow in a hanging basket?
Yes. Its low, slightly trailing stems can soften the edges of a hanging basket. Check the soil regularly because hanging baskets dry faster than pots placed on the ground.
Will Five Spot return next season?
The original plant completes its life cycle within one cool season. Mature seeds may fall and produce new seedlings when cool, moist conditions return, but self-sowing is not guaranteed.
Common names: Five Spot, Fivespot, Five-Spot Baby, Buffalo Eyes, Nemophila maculata
Seeds are very good quality and fast germinated that's all.
