Bone Meal Fertilizer is a natural organic fertilizer made from finely ground animal bones. Also known as bone meal powder or bonemeal, it provides slow-release phosphorus and calcium for plants that need stronger roots, better flowering, bulb development, and long-term soil nutrition.

It is especially useful for roses, seasonal flowers, onions, garlic, bulbs, tomatoes, chillies, okra, fruit plants, and kitchen garden crops grown in pots, grow bags, garden beds, or open soil.

In Pakistan, gardeners often use bone meal before planting winter bulbs, root crops, flowering plants, and fruiting vegetables. It works best when mixed into the soil near the root zone and watered well after application, especially when the soil actually needs phosphorus.

Pack Size Guide

1kg: Best for a few pots, trial use, or small balcony plants.
5kg: Good for grow bags, garden beds, fruit plants, and repeat use.
25kg: Best for larger gardens, lawns, raised beds, or bulk soil mixing.

Most home gardeners choose: 1kg or 5kg.

Why Gardeners Prefer It

Phosphorus-Rich Fertilizer
Supports root development, flowering, and early plant establishment.

Calcium Support
Provides calcium, which helps support stronger plant structure and healthy growth.

Slow-Release Nutrition
Feeds gradually over time, making it useful before planting and during long growing cycles.

Good for Bulbs and Flowers
Useful for roses, seasonal flowers, onions, garlic, tulips, and other bulb-forming plants.

Useful for Fruiting Vegetables
Suitable for vegetables such as tomatoes, chillies, okra, and gourds when used correctly.

Works Well with Organic Soil Mixes
Pairs nicely with compost, vermicompost, neem cake and other organic soil amendments.

How to Use Bone Meal Fertilizer

For Garden Beds and Borders

  • Mix 1–2 tablespoons per square foot into the topsoil before planting.
  • For existing plants, sprinkle near the root zone.
  • Mix lightly into the soil and water well.

For Bulbs, Onions, and Garlic

  • Add 1 tablespoon into the planting area before placing the bulb.
  • Mix lightly with soil so the bulb is not sitting directly on concentrated fertilizer.
  • Cover with soil and water after planting.

For Potted Plants

  • Use 1 tablespoon for a 12 inch pot .
  • Mix into the soil during planting or apply as a light top dressing.
  • Water thoroughly after application.

For Trees and Shrubs

  • Use 100–250g per plant, depending on plant size.
  • For small fruit plants or shrubs, use around 100g .
  • For medium trees, use around 150–250g .
  • Spread around the drip line, not directly against the trunk.
  • Mix lightly into the soil and water deeply.
  • Repeat every 4–6 months if needed.

Quick Tip

Always water thoroughly after applying bone meal. It helps settle the powder into the soil and supports slow, steady nutrient release around the root zone.

Seasonal Tip

Apply bone meal before planting flowering or root-forming crops. It is useful for onions and garlic in cool months, roses and fruiting vegetables during active growth, and seasonal bulbs before planting.

Important Note

Bone meal is most useful when your soil needs phosphorus. In very alkaline soil, phosphorus availability can be reduced, so bone meal works best when mixed with compost or organic matter. Avoid overusing it in soil that is already high in phosphorus. Always mix bone meal lightly into soil and water well after application.

FAQs

What does bone meal fertilizer do?

Bone meal fertilizer provides slow-release phosphorus and calcium. It supports root development, flowering, bulbs, fruiting vegetables, and long-term plant growth.

How often should I apply bone meal?

Apply once every 4–6 months if needed, because bone meal releases nutrients slowly. For best results, mix it into soil before planting.

Can I mix bone meal with other fertilizers?

Yes, bone meal works well with compost, vermicompost, neem cake, seaweed liquid fertilizer, and balanced NPK fertilizers. Avoid overusing multiple phosphorus-rich products together.

Does bone meal have a smell?

Bone meal may have a mild earthy or organic smell, especially before watering. The smell usually reduces after mixing it into soil and watering well.

Can I use bone meal in pots?

Yes, use 1 tablespoon for a 12 inch pot and mix it lightly into the soil. Water well after applying.

Is bone meal good for roses?

Yes, bone meal can be useful for roses when the soil needs phosphorus. Mix it into the soil around the root zone and water deeply.

Is bone meal better than rock phosphate?

Bone meal is usually better when you want somewhat faster phosphorus availability for bulbs, roots, and flowering plants. Rock phosphate is slower and more focused on long-term soil building.
