Native to Australia, Strawflower is usually grown as an annual. Its crisp, layered flowers retain their shape and colour after cutting, making them suitable for fresh bouquets, dried arrangements, wreaths and decorative crafts.

How to Sow

Helichrysum seeds need light to germinate and are easiest to start in a seedling tray or small pots.

1. Fill the tray or pots with fine, moist seed starter mix.
2. Scatter the tiny seeds thinly and evenly over the surface.
3. Press them gently onto the mix without covering them.
4. Water the surface gently using a fine spray.
5. Keep the container bright and the mix lightly moist.
6. At 2–3 pairs of true leaves, transplant seedlings 10–12 inches apart.

Plant Care

Water regularly while the young plants are becoming established. Once they are stronger, allow the upper layer of soil to begin drying before watering again. Avoid soggy soil because constant wetness can damage the roots.

Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the final potting mix before transplanting. Add another small amount after 6–8 weeks only if potted plants become pale or growth slows. Heavy feeding can produce soft, leafy growth with fewer flowers.

Helichrysum generally has few pest problems. If aphids gather on the tender growth, spray Neem Oil on the affected foliage while avoiding open flowers. Leave enough space between plants to reduce fungal problems during humid weather.
