Dianthus Mixed forms compact, bushy plants covered with fringed flowers in shades of pink, red, white, purple and attractive two-colour patterns. Many blooms have contrasting edges, rings or dark centres, and some carry a light, sweet-spicy fragrance. The narrow grey-green leaves keep the plants neat in pots, along pathways and at the front of flower beds.

Native from eastern Europe through temperate Asia to northern India, China Pink grows best during cool, sunny weather. In Pakistan, it provides colour throughout winter and early spring while temperatures remain comfortable.

Why Grow It

  • Fringed Blooms: Notched petal edges give the flowers a delicate appearance.
  • Mixed Patterns: Flowers may be solid, ringed, edged or two-coloured.
  • Compact Growth: Bushy plants suit pots, pathways and front borders.
  • Pollinator Friendly: The open flowers attract bees and butterflies.

Best Conditions

  • Germination: Usually 7–21 days
  • Temperature: Around 18–22°C
  • Sunlight: At least 6 hours
  • Pot size: An 8–10-inch-wide pot for one plant
  • Spacing: About 8–12 inches between plants
  • Plant height: Usually around 10–18 inches
  • Flower size: Approximately 1–3 inches
  • Soil: Light, moderately fertile and well-draining mix

In Lahore and Faisalabad, sow from late September to November, or again from late January to February. In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sow from September to October, or again from late February to March after severe cold has eased. In hotter areas such as Karachi and southern Punjab, sow from October to December. In colder northern and hilly areas, sow from March to April after the risk of hard frost has passed.

How to Sow

Start Dianthus in a seedling tray or small pots where the fine seeds and young plants are easier to manage.

  1. Fill the tray or pots with fine, moist seed starter mix.
  2. Sow the seeds thinly and evenly over the surface.
  3. Cover them with around ⅛ inch of fine mix.
  4. Water the surface gently using a fine spray.
  5. Keep the container bright and the mix lightly moist.
  6. At 2–3 pairs of true leaves, transplant seedlings 8–12 inches apart.

Plant Care

Water regularly while the seedlings are becoming established. Once the plants are stronger, water when the upper soil begins to dry. Water near the base and never leave the pot standing in water because the central growth can rot.

Mix a small amount of Vermicompost into the final potting mix before transplanting. If potted plants look pale after 6–8 weeks, add another small amount. Avoid frequent heavy feeding.

If aphids appear, spray Neem Oil on the affected foliage while avoiding open flowers. Remove slugs and snails by hand if they damage young plants.

Local Gardener Tips

  • Give full winter sun and light afternoon shade as spring becomes warmer.
  • Transplant at the same depth used in the tray without burying the centre.
  • Water early in the day so the foliage dries before evening.
  • Remove fallen leaves and petals during foggy or humid weather.

Flowering

Dianthus Mixed usually begins flowering around 14–16 weeks after sowing. Blooming remains strongest during sunny, mild weather.

Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage later buds. After the first heavy display, trim the old flower stems just above the leafy growth to encourage another flush.

FAQs

Is Dianthus Mixed the same as Carnation or Sweet William?

No. This packet contains Dianthus chinensis, commonly called China Pink. Carnation is usually Dianthus caryophyllus and has larger, more heavily ruffled flowers. Sweet William is Dianthus barbatus and forms dense clusters of smaller flowers.
